At the time he wrote this the British had already scoped and carved out the middle east. Enslaving the natives and ready to drain them of all of their oil. That is the story of the Lawrence of Arabia thing and why we fought unrelated WW2 battles there, and finally the rise of OPEC the 70's Oil Embargo's, the US/UK CIA coup of the Iranian Government that brought back their hated Shah, which spawned the later revolution of the Shah which turned them into a totalitarian Theocracy. Cutting up the Borders of Kuwait and Iraq which lead to the Gulf War. Plopping Israel smack down in the middle which lead to more wars and tension.
Asking them to behave like good Christians which lead to a Muslim resurgence and now terrorist attacks and people are wondering "why do they hate us?' as well as "why are we still buying oil from them?"

Erik: Excellent summary of the historical causes of today's global effects. Unfortunately, the grasp of Cause and Effect is totally beyond most knee-jerk conservatives' abilities.
