North Carolina Stripped of its Voter Suppression Shield

Politicians in North Carolina might actually have to go back to winning elections the old fashioned way.  You know, campaigning on the issues, trying to persuade voters that you're more qualified than your opponent, etc.

North Carolina's teatard governor, Pat McCrory, has his panties in a twist because North Carolina's attorney general has refused to appeal the court ruling that overturned North Carolina's Jim Crow On Steroids voter suppression law.

"Jim Crow on Steriods"? I think these people are losing their perspective on history here. Having Parents who grew up in the Deep South where they had to put up with Intelligence test, Redlining, just plain old intimidation, or refusal physically or by legislation. If they were allowed to vote they were given the ballet of someone else choice.

Some states had laws saying only property owners could vote however any white non-property owner could sign a declaration that his family land was taken by Yankees during the Civil War/Reconstruction.
No verification was ever made.

It should be noted a lot of poor whites got caught up in this as well, addressing the right wing myth that somehow this was some sort of Affirmative Action thing that only helped blacks.

However abominable these laws are, they are nothing like those old laws.

I had faith that our courts would turn down these unconstitutional voting laws, but you never know with the courts being so political. Along with the courts turning down the Texas abortion laws closing abortion clinics, this is another good sign the right wing nut jobs will not get their way no matter how many vote for their candidates.

Erik: True, things aren't as bad as they used to be. But most of us (myself anyway) have been lulled into complacency. The North won the civil war, civil rights legislation was passed in the 1960s -- problems solved, right? So for me at least, it's always shocking how much bigotry is still lurking underneath the surface after all these decades. And, IMHO, if these voter suppression laws hadn't been overturned by courts, the local rednecks would keep on pushing the envelope to see how far back they can turn the clock.

jadedj: It's going to be dreadful. Brown people, wimmens, poor people who don't even own property -- all storming into the voting booth. George Wallace will be turning in his grave.

Luke: Thank God for Scalia finally departing. Even aside from that, there's only so much traction the Right can get from stacking the courts with their fellow bigots. At some point the 21st century will have to start rearing its head.

Seems no one has greater patience than the Right Wing, and the Southerners. Citizens United is the latest result of a battle that started in the 1870's in the passing of the 14 Amendment. Some genius figured out that if Corporations could receive incredible benefits if they could be declared as people for the sake of 14th Amendment Protections. Along the next 140 years they persisted, sometimes taking a step back, sometimes moving forward. Citizens United basically said they as Corporations are as equal as people in making political contributions. Basically SCOTUS considered Corporations as people.

Reconstruction was supposed to have fixed everything in terms of Civil and Voting Rights. If so then why are we in this mess again? The South is incredibly diligent, after the Civil Rights act of 1964 and Voting Rights acts of 1965 (Which are almost word for word the same acts in 1873). Instead of turning over and accepting it, they went with Nixon and Reagan and slowly chipped away at them in the States, In Congress, and in Regional and Supreme Courts with Republican blessing.

When Nixon promised the South to turn back Brown, he didn't mean just the busing part he meant to give them back their "Legal" segregation. They seem to still want it anyway they can, and get the rest of the Country in on this, it will be a newer, less restrictive type of Jim Crow but Jim Crow nonetheless.

What's amazing is they're putting this on a Generation that doesn't even remember Segregation, and they seem to like it - scary!

Erik: Patience, shrewdness and a long-term strategy -- you've gotta hand it to conservative masterminds. Their rank and file may be a bunch of dimwitted bigots, but conservative leaders would probably beat Vladimir Putin in a chess match. Hiring thousands of lawyers to pore over thousands of documents to look for the flimsiest loophole; think tanks where they learn the exact phrases and code words for manipulating different segments of the population; GOP senators pulling obscure parliamentary maneuvers out of thin air that nobody else even heard of -- they've mastered all these tactics and more.

Segregation, total abortion bans (even birth control) -- these are just something out of a history book if you're younger than a certain age. Yup, scary.

What I would like to see is a total restructuring of the congressional districts in order to cut out the gerrymandering.

MRM: Me too. I think all congressional districts should be drawn according to a cut-and-dry formula based solely on population. Either that, and/or a non-partisan board or commission should make these decisions. In any case, this is too important to be left up to vengeful state legislators.

Well both sides do Gerrymander but at least when Democrats do it, they do it to empower certain previously left out groups something the Republicans would never have to worry about if they would bother to reach out to those same groups.

Erik: Republicans Gerrymander so they can empower corporations and wealthy individuals who have been victimized by political correctness and the liberal media :)
