Monster.com Tries to Intimidate Critics

You’ve probably heard about this over the past few weeks. Jillions of online Help Wanted ads are basically saying “If you’re unemployed, don’t bother.” They have a right to do that if they want; there’s no law against being a dickwad.

In response, USAction/TrueMajority has gathered over 26,000 signatures asking these companies to stop hosting employment ads that discriminate against the unemployed.

The good news is: one of these large companies — Monster.com — has taken action.

And the bad news: the “action” taken by Monster.com has nothing to do with helping the millions of Americans who are desperately searching for work. Monster.com’s “action” — they’ve tried to intimidate USAction/TrueMajority by sending them a Cease and Desist letter, ordering them to stop mentioning Monster.com.

Since it’s perfectly legal to be an asshole, then presumably it’s also legal to publicize the aforementioned asshole’s assaholic behavior.

Anyway, here’s a petition asking Monster.com and CareerBuilder.com (among others) to stop posting ads from companies that refuse to hire the unemployed. People who are looking for work are having a rotten enough time already without being shat on with “EEWW, you’re unemployed?!? Next.”
