Mississippi is Sooo Dirt-Poor, a Boycott Wouldn’t Even Be Noticed
The threat of a national boycott — and/or a Fortune 500 company threatening to leave a state — usually gets noticed by governors and state legislators. The governor of Arizona vetoed the legislature’s “Zee Paperss Pleassse!!!” law a few years ago, fearing a loss of business and tourist-industry income. And I think the governor of Missouri just vetoed one of those nefarious “religious freedom” bills for the same reason. The governors of North Carolina and Indiana are under intense economic pressure to overturn the “Jesus Don’t Like Them There Homasexials” laws that they’ve signed.
And last week the governor of Mississippi signed the “Protecting Freedom of Conscience from Government Discrimination Act,” which might be the most far-reaching of all the recent “We’s Gonna Take Our Country Back to the 1850s” laws.
Should Mississippi be worried about a boycott? ROTFLMAO!!! Mississippi is in the same position as a disgruntled employee who knows he/she is just about to be fired: “ooooohhh, what’re they gonna do, fire me?!?”
As Leonard Pitts Jr. says in today’s column, Mississippi is the poorest, unhealthiest and least-educated state in the union. And with no Fortune 500 companies and not much of a tourist industry, what’s there to boycott? If there was a boycott, how could they tell?
Leonard Pitts Jr. closes his column with:
“…Mississippi just passed a law that 80 percent of its eighth-graders would struggle to read. If they graduate, those young people will look for work in a state with an unemployment rate significantly higher than the national average. But if one of those kids does manage to find work at the local doughnut shop, say, she will — until the law is struck down, at least — have the satisfaction of refusing service to some gay man, secure in the knowledge that the state that failed to educate her or give her a fighting chance in a complex world, now has her back.
One feels sorrier for her than for the gay man. Her life will be hemmed by the fact of living it in a state that fights the future, that teaches her to deflect and distract, not resolve and engage.
The gay man can buy doughnuts anywhere.”

Mississippi the the "Third World Country" state of the US. It demonstrates what a republican government gives you.
How many of you out there want to become Mississippi.
Jerry: I guess it's a matter of somebody's priorities. If keeping them purvurts, nigras and wimmins in their place is more important than a thriving economy and clean air and water, then Mississippi is the place to be.
They tried the same thing in the 1960's-70's Religious Freedom so as not to follow the Civil Rights Act! SIGH just give it up and treat people decently

First, or fiftieth, Mississippi always seems to lead (or wallow) in every undesirable characteristic in the country.
Mississippi never disappoints us. What a Godforsaken place.
Also remember the Bob Jones case in the late 80's?
Erik
Erik: I think KKK types have been wrapping themselves in the Bible and the flag since the 1800s.
I don't remember anything specific about Bob Jones University, other than the whole campus being a throwback to the Pilgrims and Puritans of the 1600s. I think students have to get permission from the University before they can date, go off campus, etc. Whatever floats people's boats.
JG: First or fiftieth, whichever way they want to spin it. There's a reason the other 50 states have the motto "Thank God for Mississippi."
Jim: Yup, we can always count on them. As the Holiday Inn ads used to say, "No Surprises."
Bob Jones is a private Christian College whose religion believed in the separation of the races. Black Students could go there, but they couldn't live with nor date White Students. Fine except they wanted accreditation so they could qualify for Federal Funds (whatever happened to not needing the Government in your business?) and they sued for their "religious freedom" to discriminate, Justice sued and it made it all to the SCOTUS. Here's where it gets interesting:
The Reagan/Bush administration filed a friend of the court brief in BEHALF of Bob Jones and their Religious Freedom to discriminate (typical Southern Dominated Republicans). Thankfully SCOTUS ruled against Bob Jones and another Religious Right's attempt to skirt Civil Rights Laws was thwarted again.
That was the 80's Here we go again with a different group.

Erik: Thanks for the info. It's funny how these "independent" "rebels" hate those meddling federal bureaucrats while simultaneously begging for money from them. And they probably don't even see the irony.
well, at least Mississippi...is non discrimination river. Anyone can drown in it without consideration to religion or sexual preferences. The state with the same name should take notice.
okjimm: Mississippi (the state) probably hates the Mississippi River for flowing past all them godless Yankee states; as well as being a non-discrimination river.
That there Mississippi River picks up all that there godless catering to them those queers and lezzies before reaching this here godfearing Mississippi State here we respect racism, bigotry, and don't put up with butt screwing...unless it is with consenting little boys.
Jerry: LOL. Ah thank y'all just might coulda hit that there nail on the head.
