Republicans Go Ballistic over Restored Voting Rights for Felons

The world is changing, and conservatives want it to stop so they can get off.  They’re still in a snit because they might bump into one of them there trans-jenn, uhh, lesbio, aaarrrggghh!!!PURVURTS!!! — in the bathroom!

And now, Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe has restored full Constitutional rights — including the right to vote — to all felons who have completed their prison sentences.

Approximately 206,000 ex-offenders who have paid their debts to society will now be allowed to vote.  Virginia Republicans are in such extreme shock, some of them are wandering into the wrong bathroom.

Needless to say, Virginia Republicans have filed a lawsuit to keep them ex-convicts out there on the fringes where they belong.  Their hired gun is Charles Cooper, the same attorney who went to the U.S. Supreme Court to defend the gay marriage ban.  (How’d that work out for them?)

In most states — as well as in every other industrialized country in the world except this one — people who have completed their sentence/parole are allowed to vote.  Kudos to Governor McAuliffe for dragging the State of Virginia kicking and screaming into the 21st century.

Remember these are the people who believe registering the poor to vote is treasonous and unconstitutional. But, Republicans know the more votes cast the less Republicans win.

I really liked this article and other articles you've authored.

Would you be OK if I shared one of your articles with the WriterBeat.com community? I can provide more information about Writer Beat or answer any question, but better than anything I can say in words, please take a look at the site.

If yes, just give me an "OK" and I'll handle the rest (there is no fee).

Grung: Yup, it's treasonous when poor/minority people are allowed to vote. And of course these Rightwads have no problem with private/for-profit prisons -- incarcerate as many people as possible while spending the minimum on rehabilitation and safety. But allowing people to regain their constitutional rights after serving their time -- blasphemy!

Autumn: OK, that sounds fine. Thanks.

It's really hard to believe that with all the effort to reform and equalize voting passing the 15th Amendment that we still give the states so much latitude that it almost makes it moot

Erik: I agree it's hard to believe. It's like Lucy holding the football for Charlie Brown to kick, for the tenth time. "States' rights!" "Oh please, trust the local governments to do the right thing." Worst of all is that federal legislators and judges keep falling for it. Maybe with Dead Scalia out of the way, the Supreme Court won't automatically rubber-stamp every rightwing attempt to turn the clock back to the 1850s.

It seems odd that Republican's would buck this, eh? ... I mean ... I live in Texas and convicted felons have been able to vote here for long, even in Texas, say you are a convicted felon and still serving on probation as example, if your conviction included "deferred adjudication" from the court, and you still even have for or 5 years left to serve, you can still vote in Texas, any other case, you can vote when you finish your sentence including on paper (parole/ probation)

RC: Glad to know that about Texas. There are about ten states that make it almost impossible for felons to ever vote again, even after they've served their sentence and parole. I'm glad that Texas isn't one of them.

If it were up to the democrat party they would allow the Syrian refugees to vote and lower the voting age to 12 years old

LOL. If it were up to Republicans, only wealthy white male property owners would be allowed to vote. Oh, and their inbred useful idiots could vote too, but ONLY IF they passed a written test to show their agreement with: Barack Obama is a Muslim, born in Kenya; the 2008 Crash was caused by labor unions and environmentalists; climate change is a hoax; etc.
