Jerry: Yup, that's all they've got -- Thoughts and prayers, crocodile tears and blaming the victims.

It's funny, I was just telling John Evans and our friend Dave the other day how I had kind of given up on the whole gun thing. But what happened in Orlando has given me back my fire. No more assault weapons!

Yeah considering the majority of the Victims were Gay and/or Hispanic they are all low on the Republican/Conservative List. The "best" this tragedy can do is shut up the anti-Gay fundamentalist for a few days.

Jim: Unfortunately, I think gun laws might still be a third rail among political issues. I have no interest in guns myself, but there are too many millions of people who are convinced that if we ban assault weapons today, Obama and Hillary will going house to house tomorrow and confiscating everyone's handgun. There's no logic to this, but there's no reasoning with those people.

Erik: Some of the more rightwing elements aren't even shutting up. A few fire-and-brimstone preachers and politicians have openly been cheering about the Orlando massacre. This will enable the "good cop" Republicans to talk about thoughts and prayers for the victims.

Yeah, it's strange. During the presidential election of 2004, the GOP used gay marriage as a wedge issue to help keep Dubya in office. This year we have two presidential candidates competing to be seen as the gay community's most fervent supporter.

Jim: Good example. Who knows, maybe in another 4 or 8 years, public opinion will reach a tipping point on gun laws, and presidential candidates will compete for the "Toughest on Gun Violence" title. Stranger things have happened.

I don't know, Tom. On the gay issue, the right is pandering to someone's belief. On the gun issue, we talking real money. I think money trumps belief as far as the right is concerned.

Jerry: You're probably right. Christian zealots spew a lot of fire and brimstone and venom about God and "religious freedom," but when all is said and done -- Money Talks.

SM: Yup, good old crocodile tears. I think they're included in the "Thoughts and Prayers" emergency kit.
