Immigration: A Win-Win Solution

Everyone’s making fun of George W. Bush for sending the National Guard to the Mexican border. But think about it — Everybody Wins.

ANYTHING IT TAKES to keep the illegals out of our country. We should start shooting them on the spot, period.

Anonymous: Unless you're a full-blooded American Indian, your ancestors came here from somewhere else. Do you think they should have been shot on sight? Whatever you think of illegal aliens, it takes a lot of courage to risk everything and go to a new country looking for work. And you don't even have the balls to use your name when you're leaving comments on a blog. Pitiful.

It takes a lot of courage to rob a bank, or adress the country and look in the camera and say it isnt amnesty. That doesnt doesnt make it worthy of respect.

Having said that... shooting poor people isnt going to make the world a better place. Maybe we could instead help our neighbors to the south rebuild their own country and stop the flow of people looking for work. Maybe they can take the protests to the streets of their own country the way they have here. And maybe there are changes that can be made to our system to accomidate migrant workers legally. But the flow of illegals has to stop.

For lack of a better example leeches are only looking for a meal and never mean to harm their host yet too many will kill even a large animal. Are they evil? No they are only being what they are. It is quite natural for people to want to survive and it is their right.

We should do everything we can to help build up our neighbors not only look at them as cheap labor.

Maybe we could start by not bullying them into fighting our war on drugs which has permeated their government with so much corruption and their citizens with such fear.

We SHOULD do what it takes to stop illegal immigration, that something isnt killing.

I agree Tom anonymous posters are so chickenshit. If you want to disagree do it like a man.

James: These sound like good solutions. Mexico (along with every other country in the world) has been bullied into carrying out our War on Drugs, like you say. This has to stop, if sanity ever prevails.

I hate to admit it, but I really don't have an opinion on immigration. There are so many sides to this issue, and there seem to be valid arguments for every viewpoint. That cartoon just struck me funny, so I posted it.

But your ideas sound good and well thought out.

I notice Anon has nothing to say about the companies and corporate pigs that profit from the illegals that come into our country.

He's just into being a fithly fucking racist like most of the people yelling about poor Mexicans coming here.

We most certainly need to do something about people coming into our country, but a big part of it is enforcing labor laws that are already on the books.

We need to make sure we are not feeding off of a huge slave labor base, which in turn keeps downward pressure on wages for all working people.

We're so fucking stupid in this country that it's pathetic sometimes.
Racist fucks are given equal time with open border loons on TV while the president sends the National Guard to the border to do nothing.

Mike: Yup, that's the typical rightwing response. They don't dare offend their corporate donors, so they blame everything on those wicked brown people streaming over our border. I'm in between about how big a problem this is, but penalizing employers who hire illegal aliens is the only effective way to put a stop to this. I don't think the Powers That Be really want to solve this problem, though. It's too convenient -- rednecks have a scapegoat, and corporations can get all this cheap labor.

Whoever that nutless AnonyMouse is, he/she/it left an even dumber, obscene comment awhile ago. Thank God for comment moderation; all I had to do was click on Reject and away it went.

Ahh Immigration This is what I know, don't know and wonder:

I know that sealing the border may slow down the latinos, but no one has said anything about how they will stop the millions of asians as well as the hundreds of thousands of white europeons that don't come that way.

I know we are scapegoating the latinos for what is a bigger problem.

I know the 1980 census said there were over 100,000 illegal Irish immigrants in New York alone.

I wonder what we are going to do about the Canadian border?

I wonder why so many americans are so upset over illegal immigrants taking jobs yet doing nothing about outsourcing and H1B visa's, jobs we KNOW are taken from Americans

I don't know if society can afford it if all the jobs done by illegals were given to americans who will then get paid a living wage, getting breaks, vacations, overtime, health insurance, workman's comp, bringing up OSHA issues and joining Unions - can we afford it?

I know we get damn cheap produce because of illegal immigration

I don't know if the resturant who has illegals has lower prices then the resturant who doesn't.

I know that over 90% (probably higher) of the Americans do not use illegal immigrants because they can't afford them

Meaning only the rich abuse illegal immigration

I know INS will never raid Beverly Hills, Pacific Heights, or Georgetown hauling maids, nannies, and butlers away in Chains

I wonder how the minutemens tactics are any different from what when the KKK decided to do border patrol 25 years ago?

I know I worked for 3 major Electronic Manufacturing firms in Silicon Valley that knowingly employed illegal aliens.

Which means Illegal Aliens don't take jobs away from americans because some one actually has to hire them and that someone is the guilty person.

I also know illegal aliens are not the parasites we make them out to be

I know we are always blaming illegal aliens, greedy asian countries with cheap labor and greedy oil rich arabs for our problems when we ought to be blaming the guys who keep us addicted to them.

I wonder if we find any terrorist in Mexico will we invade? (hint: Lots of Oil)

Actually, Tom, I think those should be left to go. So people can see who we are dealing with.

I'm no pollyanna, I know there are deep issues with uncontrolled immigration. There's no doubt.

And like your next well thought out Anon points out, H1 visas and outsourcing by companies is just as bad if not worse (economincally for the country) because it's almost ONLY good paying jobs.

The companies complain that they have to cut. Yea, only workers, never the officers of the companies. If cuts are needed, ALL should share the burden.
They complain about unions and pensions. That's all bullshit.
They're only thinking about one thing: the quarterly report back to Wall Street.

Erik: Those are all excellent points. Our government is so inconsistent about immigration, there's no way they'll reach a solution. Rednecks hate all these darkskinned people coming into the country, and corporations (and wealthy households) love all this cheap labor. Those are the 2 halves of the Republican party right there, and they're opposed. Talk about a wedge issue.

I really don't have a strong opinion about immigration (like I was saying above). There's just so much going on, so many smaller issues inside this larger issue; it'll never be solved with a simple solution or a soundbite. I thought the cartoon was funny, but I don't claim to have a solution to this.

There was an excellent article on MSNBC last week about life along the US/Mexican border, just sort of a slice-of-life thing about the millions of people who live close to the border. I was gonna do a post about it, but then the link disappeared. (I hate it when MSNBC does that.) So I settled for the cartoon instead.

Mike: That's true, outsourcing and those H1 or H1B visas (I forget what they're called, but Silicon Valley demanded them from their prostitutes in Congress) are way more damaging than Mexicans sneaking over the border. American citizens aren't clamoring to pick grapes or almonds in the 110-degree heat, but thousands of IT workers have lost their jobs because of what Silicon Valley (and other high-tech areas) has done.

Unfortunately there's no soundbite to convey this in ten seconds. It's much easier to push all the National Security and Us Against Them buttons by yelling about brownskinned aliens sneaking over our border.
