Which of these two phrases describes your take on President Obama? “There’s a new sheriff in town” or “Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.” I’m beginning to think it’s the latter.
No wonder Real Republicans hate that pussy RINO governor of California. College education is just as important as the Prison-Industrial Complex??? Schwarzenegger wants a constitutional amendment that would guarantee at least ten percent of California’s budget to the University of California and the California State University system. And he wants funding for California’s prison system to be scaled BACK to ten percent. WTF??? If them folks get edumucated, who’ll be watching Fox News?
And speaking of linking things, how about: bank executive bonuses and the insurance premium paid by that bank to the FDIC? Go ahead, pay your bloated CEO a quatrabrazilian dollar bonus; and your insurance premium will go up accordingly. Works for me.

At least he wasn’t hiding a bomb. Who knows, maybe we’ll all have to start following this guy’s example. It might be the only way to keep our nation safe from terrorist attacks. “Hey You! Yeah you, wearing clothes! What are you hiding in there?? Up against the wall!”

The only wat to curb executive greed is going to be to make someone suffer for it. Unfortunately, the ones who will suffer with the FDIC will be the customers, so it won't make much of a dent.
An Eisenhower-era tax bracket would, though.
I'm with you, Tom - Seems like much of the same ol' status quo.
The Prison/education thing is getting a red flag from me for now, till I see something different. I think this is his way of trying to get things privatized education wise and prison wise to balance things out.
Love, love love the idea of tying in bank bonuses and ins premiums. Won't happen, they are a huge lobby that throws money at the powers that make thee rules.
This will be what ends the pat downs at the airport for sure. Have you seen some of the people going through these days? I just came back from a Christmas vacation in Baja and saw it for myself. I myself, was treated to an extra little feel up by a TSA employee.

JR: I'm all for bringing back the tax structure from the 1950s. Even in the '80s under Reagan, the tax code looked socialistic compared to what we have today.

And unfortunately you're right about the bank lobby. They're running the show, regardless of which mascot is out there in front yelling "we're gonna crack down on this."
Tom, speaking of atheist libruls and KC. I saw a you tube a while back, where he was handing out his revised Origin of the species, and when called out on the fact there were chapters missing he had not a word of defense for it.
Gotta keep one step ahead of the bastard also if you want to stay just even with them. The things I read yesterday about the whole prison/ed conversation had me going all over the place to see what the toady is up to before he leaves office. He has screwed up this state, more than Gray Davis could ever have imagined all the while saying, I don't answer to special interests and answering special interests. I know we have stupid people here, but I did not think there were that many of them.
It seems like Arnold is taking baby steps to privatizing the prison system in California. Blackwater or whatever they are called these days, they might be interested in taking a few billion more taxpayer dollars, and do a lousy job.
Californians are nuts if they allow that crap, I agree money spent on prisons should not be more than is spent on education, or perhaps they will privatize the universities too.
Holte that is what all the uproar was about with all the UC protests recently. Half of them are already semi private-public entities with the funding for the schools.
Jess, Holte: I guess you guys are quicker on the uptake than me. I keep thinking that if a headline looks like good news, it really is good news. I should know better, after all these years of government/corporate corruption.
OK, then, privatized prisons it is. Maybe there's a silver lining in there somewhere. Or like that old joke goes, "oh boy, there must be a pony in here somewhere!"
No Tom, not at all good news bad news and being quick or slow on the uptake. This is what makes the Internet fantastic, you get all different types of people with different information and it is available in real time almost to the other(whoever it is). I just follow a lot of CA blogs and when the UC system protests started people were getting to the bottom of it. Same thing happened when he came up with his latest right wing idea, to go in and try to mess with education and the prisons for balancing the budget. Surprisingly enough he had been given one that was balanced and he vetoed it. Same thing with a CA specific universal type health care program, vetoed it because of the insurance companies here.
The corrections lobby here is huge and my guess is, unless it benefits them they will work against it. They really need to revisit the sentencing structure here to get the people like me, your average pot smoker out of jails. One of the things that does get in the way, they have a whole bunch of incarcerated people that work for pennies on the dollar and the institutions get the coin for whatever it is they are making. It is like slave labor, only they get medical treatment and 3 meals a day. Not the best medical treatment by the way, since Ahnuld took over, the prison med system has been put into federal receivership.
He is trying or did try to get that stopped, but so far nothing. Same thing with his furloughs of state workers. He has been taken to court and now the state may owe up to 100 million + to repay all those workers. It is a right wing wet dream here in CA right now. I just hope this next election we all decide a dem is way better than what we have had to put up with the last several years.
I'm liking this Thursday Hodgepodge...will it be a regular Thursday feature, not unlike mine own Potluck Sunday? I sure hope so, because you do it way funnier than I do :)

Jess: Don't get me started on the corrections lobby in California. That used to be one of my most infuriating issues when I lived in CA (we moved to Washington in 2004). That prison guards' union has to be the wealthiest and most powerful union in the country. And for some odd reason the union-hating Right Wing loves the prison guards' union. And that three strikes law -- People used to call it the "prison guards' full employment act" or something like that. Talk about the Prison Industrial Complex.
Commit a burglary, forge a check and then steal a candy bar -- Strike 3, life in prison.

Distributorcap: You're right, sometimes it's hard to find anything to write about because the headlines are just the same old recycled reworded stories day after day.
Suzan: I don't think Obama is a turncoat or anything; but you never know. Mostly, I'm afraid corporate conglomerates have such a stranglehold on the country, everybody in government -- from the president on down -- is just a secretary taking dictation from the boss.
Four-legged creatures... heh! If the pinnacle of evolution is a horse's ass, I fear humanity is just about there. At least it looks that way on the American political scene.
