Republican Hypocrisy on “States' Rights,” “Individual Freedom” and “Limited Government”
This isn't exactly an Earth-shaking revelation, but it's refreshing to see this issue written up at a mainstream news site by a well known author: Republicans say they believe in small government, except when it comes to marijuana.
A current example of GOP two-facedness is their lawsuit du jour against Obamacare. They're determined to get the Supreme Court to overturn the Affordable Care Act — which was passed by Congress — while simultaneously ranting about “unelected activist judges legislating from the bench.” If you're not a Republican, you'll notice a certain irony here.
As Ryan Cooper says in the linked article, “Conservatives don't like ObamaCare and want it destroyed. How this happens is of little importance.” So what if it takes an activist judge spitting all over the American People's elected representatives? What's your point?
The other high-profile current example is marijuana legalization in Washington, D.C. The will of the people (pot was legalized by an initiative that passed by a landslide among Washington, D.C. voters), local government control vs. the Big Bad Federal Government, personal freedom — this pot legalization vote is a flagship of GOP slogans.
And as you've probably guessed, congressional Republicans are determined to use their federal authority to stomp all over the will of Washington DC voters, the local autonomy of the District of Columbia and the GOP's own rhetoric about “individual freedom” vs. “government tyranny!” and “government overreach!”
As the article asks, “Where's the Tea Party?”
Labels: marijuana, Republican hypocrisy

DC is a territory with the same status as Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands, Samoa, Panama (oops) and Guam. They pay taxes, they got no representation, and they only get to vote for president. Is it really just keeping the even 50 number/changing the flag or it is the strong minority population keeping these territories from becoming states?
As soon as I heard of this initiative I said forget it Congress controls DC and it'll never happen!
Historical note: In "All the Presidents Men" Woodward and Bernstein remind us that the Watergate Burglars were caught and arrested by the City Police, a Police force that serves and answers more to the city, had they been caught by the capital police that serves the government, The White House could have just picked up the phone, and the scandal might not have ever happened.
Erik
Tom H,
D.C is of course predominantly made up of black citizens. As Faux News and the Right-Wingers constantly remind us Cannabis is a DANGEROUS DRUGE when African-Americans consume it.
Erik: The Right is always trying to incite the redneck/teabagger regions of blue states to break away and form their own state. If any of these attempts ever succeed, there'll be two more Republican senators for every new state. For the same reason, the GOP is determined to keep D.C., Puerto Rico, American Samoa, etc. under their thumbs and away from any possible chance of statehood.
Good point about the D.C. police force vs. the Capital police during the Watergate burglary. I never thought of that.
Grung: That's right, when poor people or minorities smoke pot, it's a gateway to heroin and a threat to America. If a Wall Street executive smokes pot at work during a break -- "Meh."
