What? You are telling a Native San Franciscan to Boycott Rice-A-Roni you Muslim, Atheist, Heathen, Communist, KENYAN?!!!!!
I can safely say that I rarely buy 95% of the items on that list but in the case of Ocean Spray which is just as much of a farming collective as it is a brand, my off-brand Cranberry Juice may be Ocean Spray as well.
Unless it came from China
Erik
Erik: That list was pretty shocking when I first saw it. It's getting harder and harder to find anything that isn't owned by Monsanto or Koch Industries. As far as I know you can still buy locally grown food that isn't Koch or Monsanto; but who knows? Their tentacles are everywhere.
I'm shocked too! I've been reading labels for months, making sure I'm not patronizing the Koch Brothers (Georgia Pacific), and now I find out that my substitute paper towels are Monsanto! Damn!
I will also stop buying Best Foods mayo, the only other thing on this list that I buy. I recommend Vegenaise; expensive but well worth it!
Thanks for publishing this. If even one person makes a switch from a Monsanto product, that's a step in the right direction.
SM: Yup, every little bit is a step in the right direction. I'll have to toss out the Lipton tea and replace it with the more expensive Murchie's. And goodbye to Cadbury.
I think the real shock is (for somebody who has been around as long as me) is some of the companies these guys own (they really own these companies?)
Kraft
Proctor and Gamble
Pillsbury
Coca-Cola
Nabisco
Kelloggs
Heinz (hello Theresa Heinz Kerry)
Carnation
I remember when these were THE Big corporations in the day and now owned my Monsanto? Who approved this - by my estimate these guys own probably 80% of the processed food in this country!
BTW expect no help from the Supreme's on this as Clarence Thomas' first job out of Law School was at Monsanto (part of their affirmative action program) and he's been loyal to them ever since!
Erik
Erik: My first shock at "who owns who" was about 20-something years ago when I found out that KFC was owned by Hublein (the maker of those bottled pre-mixed cocktails that minimarts sell); and Hublein was owned by one of the tobacco conglomerates.
According to a Seattle Times business columnist, these giant mega-mergers used to be routinely nixed by the Justice Department. The burden was on these corporations to show how a merger would benefit the economy. Then during the '80s (coincidence?), things got switched around. These mergers started being automatically approved, unless somebody could show, with concrete proof, exactly what harm would come if Glutco and Bloatcorp were allowed to merge.
Oh come on man, you dirty hippies are going too far this time. I cannot and will not give up the Cadbury's chocolate for anyone, not even my lefty mclefterton principles. Sorry cannot do it.
Jess: Yup, Cadbury is a tough one. Caramello...and they also make the Crispy Crunch which is available only in Canada. For some intangible reason, Crispy Crunch is so much better than Butterfinger, Clark Bar, Fifth Avenue, etc. that I don't even bother with them any more. I'll just eat Crispy Crunches 'til they're coming out my ears during our periodic trips to British Columbia.
Saving the Earth isn't all it's cracked up to be :)
Since we have been on a diet at our house, I can say that we're doing pretty well on these. We drink V8 regularly, and we occasionally eat a Quaker rice cake or a Smart Ones entree, but that's about it. Of course there is always the Proctor and Gamble stuff... those items can be pretty pervasive, I'll look closely for those! Thanks for the list,and...
Agreed on the Cadbury!
Snave: It's hard to not be patronizing either Monsanto or Koch Industries. They both have their tentacles everywhere.
Time to vent my frustration on another Cadbury.
