Indiana: It Gets Worse
Indiana Governor Mike Pence is even more of a Bible-humping redneck than you thought. While taking a Libertarian hands-off position on civil rights enforcement, Governor Inbred wants to increase the prison sentences for minor drug offenses.
In a completely unrelated coincidence, the GEO Group (based in Florida), one of the country's largest private prisons, has made huge campaign contributions to Mike Pence and other Indiana conservatives. GEO Group needs more, uh, clients (i.e. prisoners) to fill their prisons and ensure even greater profits. And the way to achieve this is:
“Tougher marijuana possession and dealing penalties could be added to a proposed overhaul of Indiana's criminal sentencing laws by legislators after Gov. Mike Pence questioned whether the plan was strict enough on low-level drug offenders. One proposed change expected to be voted on Thursday would make possession of between about one-third of an ounce and 10 pounds of marijuana the lowest-level felony rather than the highest-level misdemeanor.” [from the linked article]
Yup, just another example of that good old free enterprise and limited government that conservatives love to talk about.
After Mike Pence has (finally) finished sucking off the lobbyists from GEO Group, maybe local businesses will invoke their newfound religious freedom by refusing to serve him.

Cirze: I'm more than ready for the anti-fascists to start uniting. The public backlash against Indiana's "religious freedom" law, and the backlash against Ferguson's systemic corruption, are encouraging. I hope there's a groundswell building.
In spite of his change of "Goodwill" (ie being caught with his pants down) I never got the idea that Pence wasn't anything but your typical Republican Governor. He will find some way to get his credentials back.
And who knows maybe even run for president

Erik: Pence is definitely among the sleaziest of the Republican chameleons. He'll shout about "Freedom" and "states' rights!" when it's convenient, and then turn around and shout about "Christian values" and "we need to crack down on ________" without batting an eye.
I believe there is a groundswell building... I think our country is reaching a saturation point with the Religious Right (which is neither). I think that with all their decades of work, they're nearing the point at which they can't make any more headway. They have already made far too many inroads into American politics, but I believe America will only stand so much before we start seeing some major pushback.
In other words, I like to think they are an idea whose time has come... and gone. :-)
Snave: I agree that the Religious Right is neither, and that their Spanish Inquisition agenda has come and gone; for the time being at least.
