U.S. Navy: Welcome to the Pacific Northwest Electronic Warfare Range (formerly known as Olympic National Park)
The Navy wants to vastly expand its Electronic Warfare testing range to include Olympic National Park, among other unspoiled wilderness areas in western Washington. The Navy has already been conducting similar tests in a remote region of Idaho, but for reasons that keep changing with every public statement they make, they now want to move — and exponentially expand — this operation to Olympic National Park.
The Navy has been trying to keep everything hush hush; this scheme has been in the works for awhile now. Every time a bit more information leaks out, a Navy spokesperson will recite a few soothing doublespeak “there there now” talking points to calm the masses. A groundswell of public alarm is slowly building, but it's been a slow process.
The deafening noise of low-flying jets — hundreds a day — would create deadly hazards to birds, bats and marine wildlife, not to mention the millions of tourists who would stop visiting Olympic National Park and other wilderness areas. And there are countless horror stories of what the electronic testing in the park could do to people and wildlife. A lot more research is needed. The truth is probably somewhere between the worst of the horror stories and the Navy's dismissive “sheesh, you have a microwave in your kitchen, right? Same thing. Don't be such a pussy” talking points.
After attending a local meeting last night, my attitude has gone from “hmmm, that sucks” to “Holy Shit! WTF are we gonna do?!?!?!”
I'll probably be doing a lot more posts on this subject as I learn more; i.e. as the Navy scrambles into Damage Control mode every time another bit of information leaks out. I'll try not to bore the beejesus out of my readers (both of you) by obsessing over the same subject, but this is dire.

This is so scary. Completely unnecessary. The Navy has good training grounds in use in Idaho where there are no people and sensitive ecological systems being harmed.
Their excuse for wanting our PARK is that their pilots will have 1.5 hours per day more time at home with their families. What about OUR families? This will devastate our quality of life, kill massive numbers of innocent animals, and also just incidentally trash our property values. That should worry people even if nothing else does.
Be afraid -- this could easily happen in YOUR backyard, too.
Let's not be a country that is RULED, GOVERNED, and IN THRALL TO our military. Guys, YOU work for US.
Stand up, everybody!
SM: It makes you wonder why the libertarians and teabaggers aren't up in arms over this. I guess their "property rights" and "government power grab" slogans only apply when a developer suffers a 1% profit reduction because of environmental regulations, or a health insurance company isn't allowed to drop your coverage because you had the nerve to sick.

Is this the same thing that was going on in Puerto Rico for so many years, I was on the understanding they finally managed to stop it. Maybe that's why they moved it to Washington.
Awfully close to the border aren't they?

Erik: I didn't know about the situation in Puerto Rico. The Navy is currently doing this electronic warfare testing in a remote part of southern Idaho. They want to expand the operation and move it from Idaho to Olympic National Park and other nearby wilderness areas (and that includes all populated areas in the vicinity).
The Navy's stated reason for moving their testing from Idaho to western Washington is that the shorter jet flights -- from the Naval Air Station on Whidbey Island -- will provide a shorter flight route and hence a shorter workday for the Navy pilots who are conducting the tests. Even if that's their actual motive, the greed and self-centeredness is unimaginable. That's like building a bunch of brand new 8-lane freeways through every park and residential area so that commuters can shorten their commute and spend more time at home.
Truly, it seems nothing IS sacred to many of those with the expedient, right-wing military mindset...
Snave: I keep thinking this issue will get everybody, left and right, up in arms. If the Navy's plan goes through, it will severely affect the local economy and property values (i.e. if millions of tourists stop visiting the wilderness areas and nearby towns). But so far there hasn't been a peep out of any of the local "Property Rights!" wackos.
