Thank God For the Confederate Flag

Wait, it's not what you think! I didn't suddenly mutate into a Born Again Klanbagger. But you won't believe the irony here.

The Koch Brothers' Harem (formerly known as Congress) voted yesterday on a funding bill that would have basically crippled the Environmental Protection Agency and large portions of the Endangered Species Act. And as it turned out, our air, water and wildlife were saved by the Confederate Flag.

House Republicans pulled the controversial spending bill at the last minute because too many lawmakers wanted to preserve the Confederate flag in National Parks and cemeteries.

Friends of the Earth’s Lukas Ross said:

“Apparently the only thing that matters more to House Republican leadership than sacrificing American’s air and water is defending the legacy of slavery. We can only hope that this bill stays dead and buried.”

It seems to me that there is no difference between flying the confederate flag and flying the nazi flag. They are both enemies that tried to destroy our country and we defeated them in a war.

Jerry: There's a Facebook posting that says "In Germany, the Swastika is only displayed inside museums." Our own homegrown Nazis/Rednecks could follow those guidelines, but they won't.

Maybe just maybe this will show that the Nixon/Reagan Southern Strategy will backfire on them. In order to get Southern loyalty and seniority back in 1964/69, the Republicans had to promise to take on their platform of anti civil rights. But it also meant that they took on the Southern philosophy, quoting Southern revisionist history, and supporting their state rights platforms.

It worked as most of the senior Republican committee chairs and leaders have been from the South.

It was deranged hearing Northern, Midwestern, and Western politicians sounding like Southerners.

Its also what’s causing the California Republican Party to become endangered. Even if their districts wanted something outright, their representative was stuck between their Southern masters nationally on one side and Grover Nordquist on the other side. People found them out of touch with their districts (and the needs of their state) and are giving democrats super majorities in both houses.

Don’t any of those non Southerners have ancestors that fought for the Union?

Erik: "Don’t any of those non Southerners have ancestors that fought for the Union?" Good question.

I'm glad to see their Southern strategy finally backfiring. This EPA de-funding bill wasn't the first time a bunch of rightwing extremists derailed themselves by tripping over each other. I hope this becomes a lot more common.
