Meet the New Bigoted Redneck, Same as the Old Bigoted Redneck

Time marches on, but people's paranoia and prejudices remain the same.

In 1939, during some of the worst Nazi atrocities, Americans were asked:
Should the US government permit 10,000 mostly Jewish refugee children to come in from Germany?

More than 60% responded No.

Haven't made much progress, have we?

Or we could take the glass-is-half-full approach:  the human race isn't devolving or deteriorating.  We've always been this fucked up.

And that was before the threat of terrorists sneaking in

Jerry: That's for sure. Sometimes the apple doesn't fall far from the tree, and other times the apple lands so close it sticks to the bottom of the tree trunk.

I've read articles and Documentaries of that era. A lot of Americans didn't care that Nazi Germany was anti-semantic, as long as they were pro western Europe, pro capitalism, anti eastern -Europe, and especially anti-communism, and anti Russian. In the those days it wasn't uncommon to see "help wanted" signs on the street and in the papers that also said "Christian Only" which meant no Jews- just like the Irish over 100 years ago.

The US did get the Jews they wanted though - geniusus like Albert Einstein and others to help with the Manhattan Project and other Weapons projects

We still subscribe to that philosophy, At least our government does when it comes to dictators and tyrants that can be useful ( or have lots of oil).

Erik: Yup, our government has a history of cozying up to police states as long as those dictators could be useful to us -- business partnerships, fighting Communism, etc.

Jerry: Some of the worst dictators of modern history -- Chile, Iran (up 'til 1979), Indonesia, among others -- were considered American allies and fellow Freedom-lovers just because they were anti-communist. And we can't forget Saudi Arabia, which has one of the worst human rights records ever, plus they're the main financial backing for the worst of the Islamic terrorists groups. But they have the drug we're addicted to, so we just look away and pretend it's all hunky dory.

As FDR was famous for saying: ________________ (fill in dictator there) may be a Sonofabitch, but he's OUR Sonofabitch!

Erik: That would be Samoza (sp?), who kept Nicaragua free for decades before finally losing to those bloodthirsty Sandinistas who destroyed Freedom.

Jerry: LOL. A close relative of "My Sky Wizard can beat up Your Sky Wizard!"
