Congressional Pay Raise

Boy, isn’t our government great? Congress has done such an excellent job of representing all of us, with all of our different viewpoints and income levels — they need more compensation. Of course they deserve a raise. NOT!!!

And now for some irony: Congress is also “considering” raising the minimum wage for the first time in TEN FUCKIN’ YEARS. They probably won’t, but it’s such a nice gesture. The House Appropriations Committee has added an amendment to a larger bill, urging an increase in the minimum wage.

The amendment will probably be voted down when the bill comes to a full vote. But how nice of our Kings and Queens to think of all those lowly peons who cook their food, make their drinks, sweep their floors and clean their bathrooms.

But Congress’ own pay raise — that’s gone beyond the “consideration” level. It’s a done deal. Who decided that these worthless, under-worked over-paid shitsacks needed more money? THEY DID!!!

What a cushy job. Job Description: Spend most of your hours being wined and dined by lobbyists, going on expensive trips (paid for by lobbyists) and telling everybody else to fuck off. AND, you get to pick and choose your own salary. Nice work if you can get it.

And talk about equal opportunity: here we have an affirmative action program for dickwads, assholes and douchebags. And for some odd reason, that’s exactly what our government is made up of. Hmmm…how did this happen? Did we bring this on ourselves?

How nice it must be to be able to give yourself a pay raise. They should get a raise alright, at the ends of ropes.

Folks like DeLay have actively fought to keep people in the Marianas in what amounts to slavery.

I don't really have words at the moment. The hypocrisy is beyond breathtaking.

And just how many days were they in session!? My heart bleeds for them. And when I start collecting social security I will be getting pennies compared to their retirement package. Ain't life great! Our tax money at work??

Jolly Roger: Oh yeah, gold old DeLay. Devout Christian, life is sacred, and he made sure those sweatshops in the Mariannas were immune from any American requirements for wages or job safety. The people working in those sweatshops didn't count since they weren't fetuses or vegetables.

Jill: I don't think they're in session very long (and that's probably a good thing). When you match their salaries and perks against the hours they "work," they're probably making more than the highest-paid doctors or lawyers. And their "work" consists of God knows what.

Now Tom, instead of freaking out about a 2% COLA, why don't you look at this guy and ask some tough questions about your own party.

Rep. Alan Mollohan, D-W.Va., under federal investigation for blending his commercial investments with his duties as a congressional appropriator, acknowledged Tuesday that he misstated more than a dozen transactions on his financial-disclosure forms.

The 12-term lawmaker said he recently discovered "a limited number of inadvertent errors" in his public reports from 1999 through 2004. He said he has amended those forms "to correct any inaccurate impressions about my finances."

He also released a chronology purporting to explain how his assets grew from no more than $565,000 in 2000 to at least $6.3 million in 2004, primarily through heavily leveraged real-estate transactions.

Mollohan resigned earlier this year as the ranking Democrat on the House's ethics committee after a probe was begun into his personal finances.

The link didn't work. But your story doesn't surprise me at all. My post was directed at both parties. At one time our representatives were supposed to be "serving" the public. That's totally fallen by the wayside. These assholes are "earning" as much as top-paid lawyers, doctors and senior executives; without doing much work. I think they all suck and need to be kicked out.

Not to be a party pooper, but why should't they earn as much as lawyer's? (Though $168,000 is chump change to most high end lawyers).

Making a statement like they all suck and need to be kicked out, doesn't help. Who all? Are you including the crooked lefties in this scenario?

Basically Tom, you need to understand that politicians are what they are, some are o.k., and some are crooks.Just like there are bad cops and good cops. Good doctors, bad doctors.

I had a brilliant plan a few weeks ago, that we fire every politician in the country, and then just turn it all over to me to run. I'd fix everything up right quick.

(For the millionth time, to those lefties that read that last part, it was a joke.)

Funny how the wingnut community tries to offer up two Democrats as supposedly evidence of some vast corruption in the Democratic party. Yet when have they tried to call out the 25 or so Republicans under investigation for a host of legal issues?

Everybody keep in mind: K Street Project and Jack Abramoff. None of which had ANYTHING to do with Democrats.

Jenn the Party Pooper: I don't agree that they're worth anywhere near that much money. Don't forget all the perks, the wining and dining and the junkets all over the world -- paid for by taxpayers and/or lobbyists. This is supposed to be a service job. If they want big money they should go after it in the private sector.

Yes there are some good politicians; my point was that both parties are corrupt. The Republicans are more corrupt right now just because they control both branches and the White House. This is happening on their watch.

But I don't look the other way when a Democrat (like Jefferson) gets nabbed. I usually vote Democratic, but only as the lesser of 2 evils.

Oh, and your brilliant plan is misguided. I'M the one who could fix things up :)

Brad: Yup, K Street Project, Abramoff -- Republican all the way. It's their baby.

The wingnuts are making the rounds, eh?

Being that they are imploding, it's not surprising at all.

Just like corporate pigs that drive companies into the ground and come out with raises all the same, fuck the congress and their pay raises.

These so-called "conservatives" of smaller government and the like have been on binge of cheating and spending like no other body-politic in our history.

Jenn,

You are completely correct. They do deserve the same treatment as lawyers.
I would give lawyers the very same raise that i referred to in my first post.

Mike: Yeah, they don't deserve this raise (or the last ten raises they've voted themselves) or most of the perks they get. In the private sector they'd have to earn this money instead of just siphoning it off of the taxpayers.

James: And don't forget, most members of Congress are also lawyers. Coincidence?

Fuuny how they usually ask for raises after a big scandel to suggest they may be less corruptable if they made more money.
But no matter how much more money they give themselves they keep getting corrupted.
Their benefit and retirement package is platinum
