FDA, You're Doing a Heckuva Job

It shouldn’t be surprising any more when this kind of shit happens. We found out three years ago that FEMA is just a useless empty shell. And the Environmental Protection Agency now exists for the sole purpose of protecting corporations from those #$%&!# environmentalists.

And now we find out the true purpose of the Food and Drug Administration: coddling the pharmaceutical industry and promising them there won't be any mean old competition for their products.

Wyeth Pharmaceutical instructed their prostitutes at the FDA to ban the use of Estriol. Estriol is chemically identical to human estrogen. The FDA even admitted (while they were banning it) that it has no side effects. Wyeth wants the “free market” to be safe for their own similar product. Unlike Estriol, Wyeth’s product is derived from animal hormones. And unlike Estriol, Wyeth’s product has some serious health risks, including blood clots and cancer.

Like the old saying goes, what's good for Wyeth is good for America.

I got this information from the Libertarian organization, Downsize DC. Here's the link.

Doesn’t this make you feel all warm and fuzzy, knowing that the FDA is watching out for you? At this rate we’ll probably find out the Homeland Security Department is protecting Osama bin Laden.

When the Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA) was approved three years ago — just barely, and only after several hours of threats and arm-twisting from Tom DeLay ("who???") — there were all kinds of rumors going around. The pharmaceutical industry was going to start banning (through their government stooges) most vitamin and herbal supplements so they wouldn’t have any competition. This would be done gradually of course. The peons might get a little restless if Vitamin C and Goldenseal disappeared off the shelves overnight. So we’ll just do it slooowly.

This action by the FDA gives a lot more credibility to those rumors.

This is scary stuff. But not at all surprising, sadly. I wish we could trust our government but we can't anymore.

Mauigirl: This has really gotten out of hand. A story like this confirms all those wacky moonbat conspiracy theories that have been raging through the Internet for years. I was sort of hoping they weren't true.

mauigirl has the same thoughts I do. It's the same mindset that has jokers, after the human genome project, moving to patent human fucking genes for their own product. Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness be damned in the face of one more dollar. To be that greedy is such an alien concept. Maybe these fuckers ARE from outer space.

Randal: This has to be a new low. This could jeopardize the health of millions of people. Corporate greed is one thing, but now we find out the agency that's supposed to be protecting consumers turns out to be a trojan horse. I would think millions of people would be interested in this, if ony the "media" could be bothered to report it.

That's stunning. Why the fuck isn't the media covering this shit?

We need a superhero to step up and be our champion. Jesus.

Carlos: It's incedible, the lack of coverage. This is a potential health hazar for millions of people, it's being enabled by the FDA, and not a peep out of the "media."

Tom this is something that has been going on for WAY TOO LONG and it's not just tilting the playing feild for the pharmaceutical industry to do as they please but it spans to the testing of the drugs as well. The standards for these companies to push a drug through to the consumer is a joke. The industy basically decides for itself what it will put out and the FDA just gives it the old rubber stamp. It's a huge problem. I did a post on an asthma drug I took called Advair. Right after taking it it I had issues breathing. Thought I would die right on the spot. Come to find out that this asthma drug actually raises your risk of DYING from asthma!!! What's wrong with that picture. I'd be better sucking on the tail pipe of a truck!!!!

Ricardo: True, this has been going on for a long time. In 1973 the FDA was actually considering making Vitamin C a prescription-only drug. There was such a huge public outcry that the idea quickly died. But back then we had reporters who actually reported on things. With our pathetic "media" today, the only way to find out things is to search for information online and/or be on the mailing list of various grassroots groups.

Sorry you had problems with that asthma drug. And that drug actually makes the symptoms worse and increases the danger -- Great progess we're making.

Tom,

You mentioned CAFTA; all these countries have taken the US money, and ran laughing all the way to the bank.

In Honduras this year the US Embassy was torched. This occurred due to the US Govt trying to take a Honduran Citizen to the States on Drug charges. The people revolted, and torched the Embassy.

The Honduran is still free, and living well in Honduras. How good was this agreement these idiots in Washington made???LOL

AHB: I'm glad to hear that, that some of the Central American governments took American corporations for a ride. One thing I remember reading about that treaty was that Harken Energy (Dumbya was their CEO at one time, before he was governor of Texas) won the right to sue Costa Rica over some environmental law that Costa Rica had the nerve to pass. And the amount they could sue them for was greater than Costa Rica's gross national product. I don't know if that was true or not; I never heard anything more about it.
