Mitt Romney versus Mitt Romney

It’s one thing to know, intellectually, that Mitt Romney contradicts himself every time he talks.  But there’s a whole lot more impact when you see a bunch of Romney’s previous statements — each one canceling out the one before it — all laid out on the same page.

Mitt Romney was the moderate governor of one the most liberal states, and now that he’s gunning for the White House, he’s running to the right of George W. Bush.  As  Nicholas D. Kristof asks, “which is the real Romney?”

A lot of moderate and swing voters are assuming that Romney is actually moderate and pragmatic, and he was just pretending to be a Far Right droolbucket so he could get the Republican nomination.  But what if it’s the other way around?  What if Mitt Romney was only pretending to be a moderate so he could get elected governor of Massachusetts, and the real Mitt Romney actually believes all of his Wall-Street-humping bring-back-the-Salem-Witch-Trials rhetoric?

Anyway, please click on the linked article and take Nicholas D. Kristof’s little quiz.  He lists ten quotations, and you have to guess whether each quote was uttered by Mitt Romney or Barack Obama.

After you’ve made your guesses, scroll down to the end of the article to get the answers.

Surprised?

Look at what they do, not what they say. Romney governed as a moderate. What makes you think he will govern any differently this time around. Obama has governed as a very business friendly president. The stock market has fully recovered, corporate profits are at an all time high, and the wealthy kept their tax cut and are getting richer faster than anyone else.

Smart republicans should vote for Obama. Dumb republicans should vote for the libertarian.

Liberal Democrats have no candidate.

Tom,
Romney is worse than a weather vane. He will say or do ANYTHING if he smells a vote in it. He is completely unreliable and untrustworthy.

I can't think of a better opportunity for the far right to run a candidate till now. They've done it with more conservative candidates before him.

I think Romney thinks he's Ronald Reagan, but Reagan always talked Conservative when he signed liberal bills are Governor.

See the difference?

Jerry: I agree Obama has been disappointing in a lot of ways. But to paraphrase Donald Rumsfeld, Democrats have to vote for the candidate they have, not the candidate they wish they had.

Jack: Unlike a weather vane, you can't push Romney off the roof.

Erik: I think Romney is much further to the right than Reagan. Either that or he's such a chameleon, nobody has any idea what he actually believes.
