Erik: LOL. I like states' rights as much as the next person.
Speaking for myself -- and probably for most Democrats and liberals -- I don't have any sort of rigid unyielding dogma about states' rights vs. the federal government, government meddling vs. "freedom" and "liberty," etc. I tend to decide each issue on its own merits, rather than which "ism" or dogma I can invoke.
Republicans like to pretend that the specific issue doesn't matter; the only thing that matters is their larger view of "limited government," "local autonomy," etc. That would be fine if they actually believed in a larger far-reaching philosophy that was more important than any specific issue. But they don't; it's just a bunch of convenient slogans. If they actually believed in an unyielding philosophy of federalism or personal responsibility, they wouldn't keep contradicting themselves.
PS: Sorry about the Word Verification. My Blogger log-in page is set for having Word Verification turned off, but here it is. I don't know how to get rid of it. I've looked at a lot of other blogs I used to go to, blogs that never had Word Verification, and they all have it now. I guess it's just a default setting that Blogger administrators have put on all blogs, for whatever reason.

This cartoon always reminds me why I get so queasy when I hear the slogan "States Rights". Probably it's biggest abuser was the South revising their whole history to make it a reason why the Civil War was fought, and then re-birthing the Republican Party under Nixon and Reagan to carry that banner as well.
They use this to justify everything they can't get the Federal Government to do. But if the other side does it, then they cheat and get the Federal Government to overturn.
Hypocrites Eh?
Still I believe the States should be able to legalize pot if they want to (just like alcohol) but I'm always afraid the right might use that as an opening to bring back things like Jim Crow (which they never denounced nor apologized for).
