Jerry: And sadly, it isn't getting any less true. Same as it ever was...

We need police who are representive and supportive of the community that they work for. The police are not an occupying army. They should not behave as one. They are, or should be, an integral part of the community. They need to support, and have the support, of the community.

They need to earn support, not demand support!

Support does not come out of the end of a gun.

Jerry: Exactly. For the absolute minimum, police departments need to have roughly the same ethnic makeup as the cities they're "serving." If this means affirmative action, quotas, political correctness -- tough shit; that's the way it has to be. This isn't foolproof. Black cops might still go off on black suspects, but racism and bigotry would at least be greatly reduced if cops were likely to be the same race as the citizens they're patrolling. Also, I think police officers should be required to live in the cities they're serving. This wouldn't apply to wealthy areas where a cop (and most other people) couldn't afford to live, but then again these aren't the communities that get profiled and victimized.

Did you ever see the movie Crash? Black Cops have been complaining for years that there's a certain code the white cops have established and they're expected to follow it, or else. When former LA Mayor Tom Bradley didn't get much support from the LAPD even though he was a former Captain. It seems they thought he was too "soft" on the Black Population.

Jerry - as far as the Police are concerned, they do serve the community - the white community that expects to be protected from the black community!
