Low Polls: Time to Wind Up Dick Cheney Again

When the Terror Level is Severe, this is indicated by the color red. But in case of an even greater emergency than a terrorist attack (i.e. low poll ratings), our “leaders” have an even more drastic response: 1. Go to the laboratory and unwrap the Dick Cheney Droid. 2. Wind it up and turn it loose on the lecture circuit.

Apparently the Republicans’ poll ratings have sunk low enough that this urgent measure is needed again. The Cheney Droid’s mission is to distract Americans from their Congress full of perverts and the committee chairmen who love them.

The Cheney Bot is warning audiences that the terror menace is “still lethal, still desperately trying to hit us again.” The Bot says that Bush is “protecting America” while the Democrats’ policies are a “reckless strategy of resignation and defeatism in the face of determined enemies.”

As usual, the Droid’s speeches are out of the public eye; they’re mostly private fundraisers and invitation-only events. At some of these events, local Republican candidates are refusing to jeopardize their own careers by being photographed with Cheney.

GOP strategists say they don’t care if Cheney is even more hated than Bush and Congress. His speeches “get the party faithful going.”

But Cheney’s speeches and accusations are also rallying Democrats (and everyone else who's had enough Bushit). One Democratic strategist says “When he threatens Democrats and calls them names, it’s something that really fires up our base.”

Last week Senate Democrats released a statement saying “Instead of ranting and raving on the campaign trail, Bush and Cheney should spend their time on the trail of Osama bin Laden.”

I still wonder what fairy tale the GOP is reading. I'm beginning to side with Lou Dobbs. Both parties seem to be more in tune with corporations and special interest groups than the American people.

Seeing that the last poll numbers I saw showed the Dick Cheney Bot with an 18% favorable rating, I almost hope the GOP does turn him loose. I am guessing that an 18% favorable rating means that is as far down as one can go, that the 18% represents the true believers in the party.

I can see how much of his blather is being spewed behind closed doors. Doing it in public too much might allow opponents to heap more scorn on the beleaguered GOP. Behind closed doors, he can moan, swear and complain to the rich donors, who will pony up obscene amounts of money in order to preserve their obscene wealth and power.

When the Republican leaders turn the Cheney Droid loose it is definitely a sign that they are getting desperate. And at this point, their desperation is probably heading more into the realm of abject panic. The wheels are coming off of their humvee, and they can't figure out how to keep things from crashing.

Prague Twin: Yup, bring it on out.

James: Thanks. Your blog looks interesting. I’ll check it out in more detail later.

Jill: I’m afraid you’re right. The Democrats aren’t quite as bad as the Republicans; mostly they just come up with better soundbites. We need to get some of these wingnuts out of Congress this November. Whoever takes their place will have to be held to a higher standard of performance and integrity. We can’t keep allowing corporations and lobbyists to run the country, and both parties are guilty of this.

Snave: Unfortunately Cheney’s very effective as a fundraiser. Most of the public hates him, but out of that tiny percentage of extremists, there are some wealthy donors who pour money in whenever Cheney appears. But it’s definitely a sign of desperation that Cheney is on the loose again, stirring up doom and gloom and paranoia.

When Cheney asys things like "the terrorists are desperate to attack us" you should be worried that maybe HE's the one who's up to something. Afterall, before the Foley scandal began the disintegration of the House Republicans, the term "October Surprise" meant "pre-election attack on Iran."

Carl: I still think an attack on Iran is likely. Now more than ever (as Nixon's campaign used to say). I hope Foleygate and Iraqmire have damaged Bush beyond repair, but he'll try anything at this point.

I suspect the bush whitehouse has something up their sleeve. There isn't anything like bombing a country in oblivion that gets the conservitive base juices boiling. But this time, I just don't see the majority of the country buying it except again, the party loyals. And once they see the bombings in the name of the bible, well anything can happen. Then again, with the revelation from the new book to hit the bookstores that the religious right are nothing but a tool to pick up votes and and that Rove thinks of them as nutty, they, the religios right, could turn the other way. But don't count on it.

Yellowdog Granny: Yup, nothing more dangerous than a deranged chickenhawk hunting tame animals on somebody's ranch.

Fred: I sure hope the religious right turns away from Bush. Unless they're total doormats, they've gotta be sick and tired of being used by the White House. At some point, Bush/Cheney/Rove's bag of tricks -- invasions, Swiftboat attacks -- has to start losing its effectiveness.

Great White Satan: You're right about Democrats and spines. If they take over the House and keep on being spineless, they'll just be handing everything back to the Republicans in 2008.
