Suddenly All Of Our Enemies in Iraq Are “Al Qaeda”
With Bush plummeting further and further in the polls and Iraqmire being more disastrous than ever, our “leaders” have come up with a new spin. Since the public is still rightfully concerned about al Qaeda — Presto! Every enemy combatant that we've killed or captured in Iraq is now a high-ranking member of al Qaeda.
Isn't that great? We’re winning! Freedom is on the march! At this rate we'll be capturing Osama bin Laden any day now.
Without any changes in military strategy or any new intelligence information, yesterday’s “insurgents” have suddenly become today’s al Qaeda members. If you can't win, the next best option is to redefine all the terms.
It’s bad enough that the Pentagon is putting on this charade. Even worse — the “media” is marching right along in lockstep, dutifully re-christening all “insurgents” and “enemy combatants” as “al Qaeda.” The New York Times recently used the term “al Qaeda” nineteen times in an article describing American battles in Iraq.
These are desperate times. Bush and Cheney have constantly fallen back on generic terms like “terrorists” whenever they wanted to arouse mass paranoia. If some pesky reporter asks why we invaded Iraq — “the war on terror,” “fighting them over there so we don’t have to fight them over here,” etc.
But referring specifically to al Qaeda just to push the right emotional buttons — this was always a level that even Bush wouldn’t stoop to. Until now.
Here is another example of a “news” story “reporting” on our war against "al Qaeda" in Iraq. We've all noticed the gradual change in the “media” as they’ve deteriorated from Watchdog to Lapdog. The mutation is now complete.
And here is another article on Bush’s desperate attempts to create the illusion of victory in Iraq by renaming and redefining everything.
For a larger view of the Bush Administration's history of lying, spinning and redefining, take this quiz. Had enough?

This seems to be part of the plan this President has to draw attention from what the General's will report to Congress in September.
This man say that he listens to his General's, but he is making sure that all other reports and opinions from other sources will make the General's opinions about this war moot.
From the quiz"
""The terrorists know what they want and they will stop at nothing to get it.... Their ultimate goal is to establish a totalitarian empire, a caliphate, with Baghdad as its capital. They view the world as a battlefield and they yearn to hit us again. And now they have chosen to make Iraq the central front in their war against civilization.... They are surging their capabilities, attacking Iraqi and American forces, and killing innocent civilians. America is fighting this enemy in Iraq because that is where they have gathered. We are there because, after 9/11, we decided to deny terrorists any safe haven."
- Dick Cheney
I would re-write it thusly:
"The neoconservatives know what they want and they will stop at nothing to get it.... Their ultimate goal is to establish a totalitarian empire, a caliphate, with Washington, D.C. as its capital. They view the world as a battlefield and they yearn to hit the Middle East again. And now they have chosen to make Iraq the central front in their war against civilization.... They are surging their capabilities, attacking Iraqi and Iranian forces, and killing innocent civilians. Iraqis are fighting the Americans in Iraq because that is where they have gathered. The Americans are there because, after 9/11, they decided to deny Iraqis any safe haven or any revenue from their own oil."
The shift in language is a pathetic ploy by Bu$hCo, but sadly one that will probably be a success as long as the media is complicit. When I see this kind of bullshit happening, I can't imagine how the media is so willing to go along with it. Lapdogs, indeed...
Let's Talk: Bush has gotten so good at spinning and creating smoke and mirrors, the facts don't even matter to him any more. No matter what happens in Iraq, Bush will redefine everything so that it looks like we're winning.
Snave: That's true. Change the word "terrorists" to "neocons" and the paragraph has the exact same meaning. Everyone else in the world sees this, but Americans (those 26-percenters anyway) keep on getting duped.
Maybe Bush wants an excuse to attack Iran and Syria with this nonsense, since he claims they are supporting Bush's enemies.
Holly: Yup, Bush seems to be able to spin this thing to justify any possible viewpoint. "We're winning in Iraq," "we need to attack Iran," whatever position he wants us to believe.
The American Public has shown it is always gullible when it comes to a big boogeyman set up to blame everything on.
I remember when practically all crime was blamed on the Mafia, then they broke it up and crime is still here...Imagine that!
Now they are going to blame Al Qaeda on everything hoping we wont remember that lots of people in the Middle East have had various Issues with us (ie hate us) long before Al Qaeda came along and unless we change our attitude, will continue to have issues long after Al Qaeda is neutralized.

Erik: It's just like Orwell's 1984. We need a big bogeyman to blame everything on, whether it's Eastasia, Oceana, Goldstein, communists, homosexuals, swarthy Arabs -- there has to be an outside enemy that we can point the finger at. It's too bad American citizens are just as gullible as the people in 1984. And they were a police state; we don't even have that excuse (not yet anyway).
I saw a similar post on Brad's Blog just now. In short, I wrote there that maybe this was done to make us accept the insane deal they made with the Sunni insurgents. If we have two different groups attacking us then we can't pick a side. But if we put our money and our kids' lives on the side of the Sunnis we better convince the American people the other side is pure evil--Al Qaeda. If we're fighting Al Qaeda in Iraq, then the Sunnis must be worthy of our weapons.
As for what they will do with the weapons later... That's okay. By then we'll go back to "Saddam Loyalists" or plain "Insurgents."
People In The Sun: Yup, this same cycle has been repeating itself for decades and it's about to happen again. Today they're our allies (or the "enemy of our enemy" if nothing else) so we're selling them weapons. Tomorrow the sands will shift and they'll be our enemy, but they'll still have all the weapons we sold them, ready to be used against our soldiers. So we'll find another "ally" and arm them to the teeth, and eventually they'll be our enemies and they'll be heavily armed. And so on...
The last 6 years are almost like one big, obscene episode of Candid Camera.
It's like they are trying to see how far they can go before people start storming Washington with fucking pitchforks or something.
Even after all this, people are still not made enough, though.
And the congress seems to be doing just about dick.
that was supposed to be from me. my wife was still logged in.
Mike (and Christina): Those are my sentiments exactly. People aren't mad enough and Congress is doing dick. And you're right, it does seem like an endless Candid Camera episode. I keep waiting for that TV host to appear and tell us it's been a running joke for the past 6 years.
Gah!!! [having apoplexy]
The Emperor has no clothes!
The Emperor has no clothes!
The Emperor has no clothes!
[jumping up and down]
al Qaeda woulnd't even be there if it wasn't for the fucking invasion!
[pulling hair out]
Does everybody have amnesia?!
[quoting Annie Wilkes (played by Kathy Bates) in Misery]
Okay. I guess I feel better now.
Sorry.
Candace: Glad you feel better. That's what blogging is for. Yup, the emperor has no clothes and everybody has amnesia. I sure hope the "al Qaeda" buzzword doesn't work, but there are some mighty dumb people out there. If Bush's poll ratings start skyrocketing up into the 40s or 50s, we'll know the reason.
This is Chimpy SOP.
Why do you think we kill the "AlQaeda #2" in Iraq at least once a month?
Will the b.s. never end?!! I just saw a poll that shows that 41 percent of Americans still believe Iraq had something to do with the 9/11 attacks, that percentage is up from five years ago. The neocons just keep shoveling their propaganda and way too many Americans buy into it, lock, stock and barrel. It's sickening!
Jolly Roger: I guess the Bush spin has moved to the next level. Killing the #2 person in al Qaeda every other week was fine, but hey, now every battle in Iraq is killing scores of high-ranking al Qaeda members. The smoke and mirrors just keep getting better and better.
Leo: Yup, it's sickening. There's something wrong with our education system when there's that many unthinking gullible people out there. I've read that same thing, that more people now believe that Iraq was connected to 9/11 than 4 years ago. It's absurd.
