When an “Eagle” becomes a Douchebag

This isn't exactly breaking news since it happened on September 15th. But I just found out about it and I have to rant. Somebody told me about this and I was sure he was either exaggerating or had misunderstood something.

Nope. It’s all here. (At the bottom of the page there’s a comment section; hope you'll leave one.) I already spend too much time online, surfing through blogs and “alternate” news sources. How the fuck did I miss this???

Carlos Arredondo is a 47-year-old father whose son Alex, a Marine, was killed in Iraq in 2004. Carlos was taking part in the September 15th anti-war demonstration in Washington DC. He had a memorial which he was pulling along in the parade: a casket with several large photos of Alex.

As the demonstrators marched past some members of the Cowering of the Terrified Gathering of Eagles, Carlos was attacked and stomped by five of these lowlife shitbags. Click here for photos.

Not much to say, is there? How do you express that feeling that's equal parts horror and fury? Sure you can say nasty things about these cowardly shitlicking pusbags, but what's the use? Any names you could possibly call them would be an understatement; it would be like saying International Falls, MN gets a little chilly in the winter.

This is one of the lowest things I've ever heard of. Here are the results of a Technorati search for Carlos Arredondo. A lot of bloggers have covered it; can't believe I didn’t see any of them.

And now, in the spirit of the Fairness Doctrine (RIP) — equal time for the cerebrally challenged knuckledragging community......…[searching]…...…well, so much for that. I couldn’t find a single site that either defended the five perverts or gave a different version of events. Anybody know of one?

Once again, I'd like to say that I'm shocked, but I'm not.
I'm a very calm and passive person.
I abhor violence.
However, in this instance, if I had been there among those fuckers, and had been around to see this, one of them would be missing something dear.
And I would gladly serve time in jail for it.

It's outrageous but not shocking, sad to say. I feel so bad for the dad that lost his son who now has to put up with this BS from a bunch of right wing nutcases! They are scary people always looking for a fight.

Hmmm - what a shame the "librul" media opted to ignore this - I guess the Move On ad warranted their full attention.

Mike: Exactly. If I'd been there there would have been some painful consequences for those shitstains, and I'd gladly take the legal penalty, whatever it was.

Gracie: Yes, it's definitely outrageous. I thought I was beyond being shocked or surprised any more, but I still just went through the roof when I heard about this. This is a new low. And of course the "media" couldn't be bothered with it (an offensive TV ad is a much higher priority).

So much for the "librul" media (love that spelling, Gracie). I guess if they really were "librul" they'd cover this disgrace and make a big to-do out of it. Funny, I haven't seen this ANYWHERE except on this blog.

It IS sad that on Capitol Hill, GOP senators are shitting themselves about MoveOn's ad while thousands of vets are still without their benefits or the medical care they need. Why can't they just come out and say, "To hell with those who've served AND free speech"? Oh, wait--that would be too straightforward.

If the anti-war protesters would have beaten one of the warlovers, the press would have covered the event for days.

Carlos is a good friend of mine and I was on the scene within minutes after this happened.

It is outrageous that there are American Citizens who would treat a Gold Star parent this way.

We all need to get back to the true meaning of what it means to be an American.

Miss Kitty: Yup, that "liberal media" is pretty much just a myth. This story was totally ignored. Just a few bloggers and that was it. And Congress is even more pitiful. They came out of their stupor just long enough to censure that Move.On ad and then went back to sleep.

Larry: True. Or even if the MSM didn't cover the story, every rightwing blogger would be shouting about it in unison.

Robert: Damn, you already covered the story. How'd I miss that? I check out your blog regularly but somehow that story got past me. Those were some great posts about the "Eagle" attack, the demonstrations in general, meetings with Carlos and other activists.

Oh jeebus effing gawd! I hadn't heard about this, either.

Larry's right - that would have been the news for sure from the so-called "librul" media. But I'm with you, Tom. I'd have been in the middle of somebody's, um, face, if I'd been there. Damn them.

Small consolation: maybe one reason the shitheads were so upset was that they were so outnumbered that day - they must be feeling the tide turning against them.

On the way to checking out Robert's post. Thanks.

We now know where the media stands and to continue to call them Liberal media , is just a lie that Republican has pushed for so long.

When this type of crime occurs and the media do not bother to cover it and the conservative blogs do not seem to take any fan fare in wrong doing because it might make their party and argument seem just what they are, lies.

We can control and blog about what the media and some sites wont talk about and yes, this has been moving out to the public by way of blog and talk.

The only time Republicans care about a Father of a dead service member, is when it benefits them and try to show how wrong Democrats are, walking over their true patriots.

Candace: I think you're right, the "eagles" were frustrated that there weren't more of them. They were claiming there would be "tens of thousands" of them to counter those America-hating pinkos. From MSM reports I read, there were "nearly a thousand" of them. To paraphrase Cheney, I think they're "on their last legs."

Let's Talk: Yup, it's really pitiful when the media ignores a story like this. And conservative bloggers are totally silent about it. Before September 15th they were all yelling about the big demonstrations in D.C. and how the "eagles" would be there to counter those liberal defeatists. And now they haven't made a sound since 9/15; they've gotta be embarrassed by it and they're just hoping the story will go away.

Thank you Tom for blogging about this. I didn't hear about it until I read your blog.

I blogged about it a little while after reading your blog and the article at After Downing Street. Thanks for the link!!

I'll continue to blog about it until these douchbags (and that's putting it extremely mildly) are identified, found, arrested, convicted, and thrown in jail where their carcasses can rot for the rest of their disgusting lives!!

It's fascinating in a trainwreck kind of way just how narrow these fuckers' definition of "support the troops" is. And Tom, what you said pretty much applies to every counter-rally they've ever had. The anti-war/pro-thinking crowd ALWAYS dwarfs the bloodthirsty wingnut brigade. Which the media dutifully reports on a not-nearly-regular basis. "There was a counter protest" instead of "there was a counter protest of 100 against the thousands of anti-war demonstrators."

Blogger Tom Harper said...

Randal: That's true, those pro-war demonstrations never get many participants. There's such a tiny percentage that still supports Iraqmire, even the loudest and most vocal supporters just don't add up to very many. And then they see themselves surrounded by thousands and thousands of those America-hating moonbats -- it must make their blood boil. Good.

My first impulse would have been to jump one of the assaulters from behind, get my right forearm around the front of his throat, lock my right hand in the crook of my left elbow, and place my left forearm behind his head... and squeeze. That's one that actually works, even if the goon is 6'5" and 300 lbs.

Why the media didn't cover this is unimaginable...

Good job, Robert! I'm also on the way to checking out your post.

"Liberal media"? Sadly, that one has been pushed for the last four decades or longer by the rightwingers until it has become "conventional wisdom" in our country. How else would something like the Fairness Doctrine have been discontinued, and how else could something like FOX "News" ever have been taken seriously and not laughed off the air? America had to be softened up with the repeating of the "liberal media" myth, over and over and over for years, until it was ripe for the kind of FOX crap that a lot of people now think of as "mainstream". Sheesh...

Snave: Yeah, it's amazing that this story just fell through the cracks. I was so pissed off when somebody told me about this. I did a Google search hoping not to find anything, but there it was. Unreal. I'm pretty non-confrontational, but I too would have jumped in there with feet and fists and elbows flying. That was just too infuriating.

"Liberal media," right. That and the "war on Christianity" are the 2 biggest myths of our time. The neocons have a pretty shrewd tactic: they're firmly in control and they make it sound like they're victims. Sort of like a 300-pound bully complaining that this 95-pound nerd was picking on him.

Hell, even O'Reilly admitted that "they" want to break down their Christian white man power structure. Oh, don't forget Christmas. We really hate that. I heard we have a war on it. Or a jihad, or whatever it is we like.

(Well, it IS annoying when you'd rather just stay home and watch football than travel around, heh.)

I remember reading about this too.

Kind throws the whole "support the troops" propaganda out the window, doesn't it.

It's the typical wingnut extreme right double standard.

Kerry was a traitor to them as was Wesley Clark and Max Clelan thus it was ok to smear them.

But when MoveON asked the question is it Petraeus or Betray Us? All of a sudden no one is allowed to question the military.

The exteme right wing are some of the most vile and un-American people in the country yet they masquerade as "patriots" with their "gathering of eagles" clad head to toe in American Flags.

It's truly disgusting.

America stands for freedom not fascism.

And I'm sorry to say it but the far right prefers fascism to America.

PoliShifter: Yup, those rightwing extremists are a pretty twisted bunch of sickfucks. A chickenhawk who slanders everyone who disagrees with Iraqmire is a hero. Disabled veterans and bereaved parents, on the other hand, are America-hating leftists if they disagree with the Iraqi invasion.

BTW, I commented at your current post, Night and Day, but the comment got eaten. Anyway, it was a great post.
