Who Hijacked Our Country

“Is Rick Perry Dumb?”

That’s the title of this article.

Unfortunately, a more relevant question would be:

“Does it matter?”

And speaking of dumb, Michele Bachmann keeps on regurgitating America’s favorite urban legend: America could achieve energy independence TODAY if only those damn treehuggers would get out of the way and let America drill her way to Freedom. She said:

“The radical environmentalists have demanded that we lock up all our energy resources. President Bachmann will take that key out of the door. I will unlock it.”

Oh Boy!!! This is gonna be GREAT!!! Giant gas guzzlers will come rolling off of Detroit’s assembly lines once again and gas will be 32 cents a gallon as God intended.

Then again, whatever Michele Bachmann says, take it with a grain of salt. After all, keep in mind that Michele Bachmann dropped out of school in the fourth grade, got knocked up at thirteen, and has been convicted twelve times of selling heroin to kindergarten children.

NOTE: The previous sentence was written In Jest.

Re: Bachmann and her ilk on environmentalists locking up energy resources. They say these things because they know doing that will strike a chord with a whole lot of people:

--The dumb, befuddled and gullible.

--The intelligent but underinformed.

--Mossbacks, end timers and traditionalists who fear and loathe change.

--The scoffers ("Ain't nothing bad going to happen; it's all scare talk.")

--The resenters ("It's just a bunch of enviro freaks on a power trip, trying to run everybody else's life, using high taxes and big gummint to do it.")

--Those with an investment, career or business stake in keeping the status quo, or better yet, kicking it up a notch — including radical-conservative Republican pols.

We can write all these people off as impossible jerks. Some of them are just that and can never be reached. But if we do write them all off, we're going to go on having elections like last November's.

I ran across a good interview at Salon last night that points up some reasons why the left fails to win more public support for policy matters like global warming vs. "Drill, baby, drill." It's a fairly quick read, with some good points and insight in it.

To answer your question about Perry, and Bachmann too, no, they're not dumb. They're smart in the way of predators and con artists. They know how to harvest votes from the people I described above, turning fear, resentment and selfishness into campaign money, election victories and political power.

If we're ever going to get anywhere, we've got to get better at reaching at least some of the people the Perrys and Bachmanns reach; better at neutralizing their messaging; better at offering alternatives in ways the people I described can understand and will accept.

Really?

I'm then I'm still waiting for Bachmann to say she was kidding when she said "Black Families were better off during slavery then now"

Anon:

No better then all the smart Yale and Harvard guys who ran the Country under Bush!

Wait.. what, if she takes the key out the door how is she going to unlock it. I'm guessing thinking things through, will become a thing of the past if she gets to be president. Any dumber and she would need to be watered twice a week. don't get me started on Gov Goodhair, I don't have time to put down all the things wrong with him, other than he is the candidate for peeps that thought Commander Cuckoo Bananas was too intellectual.

Sorry SW, but the overwhelming evidence of their biographical backgrounds indicates that Guv Goodhair and Michele are both morons. They are useful to the people who tell them what to think, but that doesn't make them smart. Many a savant can remember his or her lines verbatim.

J.R., there are several kinds of smart. You're ignoring the qualifiers I attached to "smart" in Bachmann and Perry's case.

SW: Thanks for the link.

I agree with your take on the groups of people that the Right is able to zero in on, and that the Left needs to do a better job of reaching these same people.

I don't think Perry (or Bachmann or Dumbya) are dumb. They have the sort of streetwise cunning and craftiness that Brad Pitt had in the movie "Kalifornia." He played a serial killer. He talked like he had an IQ of 40, but had a cornered-animal craftiness and viciousness that was just unreal.

Erik: Good point about those smart Yale guys in the Bush Administration. Bachmann is always "just kidding" if something she said comes back to bite her.

Jess: LOL, I was thinking the same thing when I first saw that article. Silly me, I always thought you unlocked a door by putting the key in, not taking it out; but what do I know?

Lew: You're right, that's pretty scary.

Dusty: It's easy. She'll just eliminate all funding for everything except the Pentagon and the Biblehumpers' social agenda.

JR: As I was saying to SW, they both remind me of Brad Pitt in "Kalifornia." Not smart in any conventional sense, but crafty and cunning beyond belief. But it's also true that you don't have to be smart to be a useful idiot to the oligarchs.

Randal: True, a puppet is a puppet.

Dave: Right you are, unfortunately.
