State Governments Pocketing Money Intended for Foreclosure Victims

Almost every state has received tens of millions of dollars from a federal mortgage settlement with the country’s largest banks.  This money was EARMARKED for beleaguered homeowners desperate to keep their homes.  But the governors of Wisconsin and Missouri have diverted this money for their own pet causes.

Scott Walker has yanked away $25.6 million from frantic homeowners and will use the money to help balance the state budget instead.  Missouri Governor Jay Nixon has taken $40 million away from desperate mortgage holders and will use the money for higher education instead.  Missouri Attorney General Chris Koster has publicly agreed with the governor.  And they’re both Democrats.

You’d expect this kind of shit from Scott Walker, the Koch Brothers’ favorite boy toy.   Missouri’s governor and attorney general have shown us once again that you don’t have to be a Republican to be an asshole.

Is this even legal?  It’s like that cliché about a panhandler who needs $300 so he can get to Chicago for a job interview, and you’re almost certain he’s just gonna spend the money on booze and drugs.  And now we have two governors who are sleazier than the most pitiful street beggar.

If it is not legal, the Feds should do something about it. If it is legal, then the system needs to be changed.

And you are surprised that big govt would do this? It's the fact that they do this that makes conservatives outraged. Hope you understand our point now. Glad to see you join in the outrage.
What is funny about your post is your shock over finding that a Democrat Governor would do this. Happens all the time at the state and federal level, you just never paid attention before.
Track some time, the money the feds gave out for jobs and infrastructure in the last 3 years and how much really produced the promised results. Govt waste and fraud is not a new thing. That's why conservatives want smaller govt and lower taxes so we can make our own decisions about what to do with our own money.

Makes me wonder what happened to the money on Florida, if it ever got here since that dickhead Rick Scott, a Republican Conservative, is "saving" money by cutting education and medicaid while refusing federal "handouts" for things like education and high-speed rail. How about that for a run-on sentence?

yeah what anon said and because it's stupid to think that the money is going o help anyone when in another year at best they will be right back where they started from. Balancing a budget and education seems to make more sense. Just goes to prove the stares know better that the big collective federal government.
That's a glimpse of what government run health care will look like at least until they run out of money to pay for it.

In case you didn't notice Conservatives are grabbing the money too. If we had smaller Government, then how would those Conservatives steal from it?

Lisa

Jerry: I hope the Feds will do something about this.

Anonymous: There are different kinds of conservatives. A lot of conservatives would say those homeowners don't deserve any aid; that they should have read all the fine print and not allowed themselves to get suckered into a crooked mortgage deal. A lot of other conservatives talk about "limited government" and at the same time they want to invade other countries and have a huge crackdown on gays, birth control, prostitution and other victimless crimes.

I can't tell which category you're in, or what "hope you understand our point now" means. I want government to be small and simplified enough to be held accountable and keep corruption to a minimum. But there's a difference between that and sweeping problems under the rug by repeating "limited government" over and over.

Mr. C: I've seen all sorts of stories about Rick Scott. Among other things, he gets an incredible deal on socialized medicine for himself while railing against "Socialized Medicine!" for the lowly public. That, and cracking down on voter registration drives, of all things.

Erik: We couldn't have invaded Iraq if we had a limited government. Ditto for our upcoming quagmires in Iran and Syria.

As usual, Jerry nailed it. I will say that at least Missouri's governor wants to use the money for higher education. Someone should keep a very close eye on what Scott Walker does with the money. I wouldn't put it past him to skim off as much of it as he can off to fund his fight to keep his job.

Don't they know that limited and small Government is one of the big reasons why the South lost the Civil War?

So they diverted it for their pet causes. Why do you hate dogs and cats and maybe parakeets too? Sheesh.

This does not come as any surprise to me. They did the same thing with the tobacco settlement money from a while ago. It's all about the freebies with the masters of the universe.

In other news, this video is so totally off topic but you HAVE to click on it. Two things may happen, you may look to see who Adele is, if you don't know already and you will laugh your ass off singing along with the words.

SW: I don't think that money should be diverted at all, even if it's for a worthy cause like education. It was specifically earmarked for mortgage holders trying to keep their homes, and that's where it needs to go.

In any case, yes, keep an eye on Walker. If he gets a sudden mysterious $26 million "donation" for fighting the recall, we'll know what happened.

Erik: They'll never learn.

Jerry: sssshhhhhh....

JR: Nice to see an All In The Family clip again.

Randal: I hate everything except pythons.

Jess: Thanks for the link. LOL.

Tom, I want all the money to go to the homeowners who were harmed, too. In noting the difference in what the two governors plan to do with their states' share I didn't mean to suggest otherwise.
