Eighth Grade Test from 1912: Could YOU pass it?
Either America has turned into a bone-stupid nation, and/or our ancestors from the early 1900s were incredibly intelligent and well-educated:

Not Quite!
Yes back then if 8th grade might be in many communities as far as most kids were going to go, then yes they crammed a lot into an 8th grade education.
The downside is that the public education system was so unequal back then, many states especially in the deep south barely had a public education system while others had high schools.
Remember Colleges were rare and a privilege and it was the effect of the GI Bill in the late 40's that started the rush to build the thousands of colleges we have today and take for granted.
Two things never change:
One- Conservatives back then thought the government shouldn't be in the business of educating our population.
Two- In terms of Geography the US usually ranks at the bottom of the Industrialized world.

Erik: Good point about the first 8 years of school having to provide all the necessary knowledge, since a lot of people would never go beyond 8th grade. It's kind of the opposite of today, with so many 4-year colleges reiterating the basics we already (supposedly) learned in high school.
And Americans are definitely the most ignorant when it comes to geography.
So last night after I had printed this out me and the hubby took the test. I still suck at math according to my scores and probably always will but excelled in the history, geography and English parts of it. I did not pass it though, the lawyer in the house did coz he more than likely cheated. He's sneaky like that.
Jess: You're more courageous than me. I looked over the questions and realized if I took the test and saw my score, I'd look like one of those inbred teatards I'm always making fun of.
Tom, my husband said it's a good thing I passed the history part of it given I teach history and social studies. He said he would not have let me forget it. He did take it to work this morning to see if anyone else could pass it. Some of them will cheat because they are type A people that need to be the best at everything. Me I don't care, test scores have always been just tools for me to see where I need to put more effort in learning something.
