Canadian Government Warns Its Citizens

Canadian citizens who plan on traveling outside of Canada have received a dire warning from their government. Canadian diplomats have been given a list of primitive barbaric countries that practice torture, and they’ve been duly warned that if they get arrested for any reason in one of these countries, they could be tortured. These backward third world countries include:

Afghanistan, China, Egypt, Israel, Iran, the United States of America, Saudi Arabia, Syria and Mexico.

And in one of these countries — I forget which one — the authorities won't even admit that they torture prisoners. There's a popular radio host who actually insists that these torture methods are “nothing more than a fraternity prank.”

Even more pathetic is the fact that millions of clueless Neanderthals actually believe everything this asshole says.

How dumb can people get? Whichever country that is, their education system must be pitiful.

Yet another proud accomplishment for Dubya and Dick.

I have been pretty outspoken on this topic around the blogs and the debate usually degenerates into a circular debate of "what do you mean when you say...?" The fact is we are either Americans who believe in upholding our constitution and laws and extending them to all people within our scope of control. Neocon arguments aside, ie Gitmo isn't "technically" American soil or these are not prisoners but "enemy combatants", as a patriotic American, I cannot support the blatant disregard for our laws and ideals shown by the current administration. I don't see how any "good American" can argue otherwise.

J: Yup, Dick and Dumbya have given us many things to be proud of.

Rockync: That's very true. We're either a nation of laws or we aren't. I'm tired of wingnuts hiding behind "oh, the Constitution doesn't apply to him because he's an enemy combatant, not a soldier" or "Gitmo doesn't count because it's not on American soil." If we make one exception we'll soon be making a thousand exceptions.

Canada removes U.S. from ‘torture list.’

Last week, CTV revealed that the Canadian government had put the United States on a “torture watch list.” Under heavy pressure from the United States, the Canadian Foreign Minister now has ordered the manual to be rewritten because it “wrongly includes some of our closest allies.” Amnesty International Canada criticized the move, stating, “When it comes to an issue like torture, the government’s main concern should not be embarrassing allies.”

Spaceneedl: Yes, I knew about that followup to the story. I didn't include it in the post since Canada only removed Israel and the U.S. from that list because of pressure from their "allies." With friends like that, Canada doesn't need enemies.

If Canada didn't take our name off that list, we would've had to waterboard a few of those punks to prove to them that we don't torture.

We "strong-arm" them to get our name taken off the list. Perfect.

the takeaway is, the bush administration is strong-arming other governments to tacitly endorse torture.

some, like canada, do so against their better judgement. others, who already torture at our request, are now happily sharpening their blades.

Candace: Yup, that's pretty funny (but not ha ha). Sort of a variation on that old joke about "the beatings will continue until morale improves."

Spaceneedl: That's true; good point. At least Canada initially had the U.S. on that list. Like you said, the other countries are "happily sharpening their blades." And the U.S. can continue being all righteous and saying "we don't torture" while we're quietly shipping suspects off to those other countries for "questioning."

Whenever I think about these "enemy combatants", I can't help but see a Nazi concentration camp in my head.

But that kind of stuff isn't going to create future generations of terrorists.

Anna: Yes, "enemy combatant" sounds like a name that the Nazis would have thought up. Same with "Patriot Act" and "Homeland Security."

Love the satire Tom. By the way I heard the president of this country does not know the definition of sovereignty? Yes??? No??
Isn't this the same Canada that O'Reilly and Coulter suggested get bombed? I'm sure this decision to take the US and Israel off the list was made after the Canadian gov't visited Gitmo and Palestine and saw that these "enemy combatants" were treated like world class citizens. I mean they did visit these places right?

I came over here to tell you that Bush and friends bullied Canada into taking us off their "They Torture People, Watch Your Ass" list, but it looks like spaceneedl beat me to punch.

We are in the clutches of a monkey with a low IQ. And what's worse, he's infused himself with chemicals in the tradition of a lab monkey. What did we expect, really?

Anonymous: Thanks. I doubt if Bush would know or care what sovereignty means. I know the rightwing mouthpieces hate Canada for not sending their armies to every corner of the world and for having that evil Socialized Medicine.

Whoever made that original list was probably warned that they'd be waterboarded if they didn't take Israel and the U.S. off the list.

Jen: I guess Democrats and Canadian officials are in the same category. They say the right things but they don't back them up.

Jolly Roger: Yup, a drug-addled monkey with a low IQ, that's who's in charge. Talk about the animals running the zoo.

I hate to say it but we belong on that list.

I can easily see a brown looking Canadian diplomat getting whisked off to Gitmo after an 'unfortunate misunderstanding' with DHS

PoliShifter: Damn right we belong on that list. I think the "pressure" we exerted to get our names taken off the list should be even more embarrassing. "Tell me I'm not a bully or I'll break your face."
