Suppress the Voters, Get Busted for DUI
Some people see pink elephants when they’re drunk. When Rep. Robert Mecklenburg (R—Two-Faced Redneck) drinks too much, he sees: Voter Fraud! “They’re everywhere! Illegal immigrants, ex-convicts, poor people, Negroes, and they’re all trying to VOTE. Stop Them!!!”
Mecklenburg was the sponsor of an Ohio voter suppression law. Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin, Indiana, Florida and a few other states have been marching in lockstep to pass laws making it more difficult to vote. Hey, if you can show twelve pieces of ID with your picture, along with official receipts for your mortgage payments and yacht club dues, then you’re probably not some swarthy comminist librul looking for a handout, so we’ll let you vote.
Mecklenburg was arrested last April on a DUI charge. He failed three sobriety tests, refused to take a breathalyzer test and was arrested. And he was in the company of a 26-year-old woman who had “personal connections” to a nearby strip club.
Ah, family values.
A local Democratic leader said:
“Given that he likely is not in possession of his own drivers license (it should have been confiscated and suspended in accordance with Indiana DUI law and procedure), perhaps he will opt to arrest his drive to repress voting rights.”

Conservatives/libertarians/Republicans/tea partyers fear big turnouts because they know most Americans don't want what they're peddling.
If Democrats were fully functioning competitors, the political right would go for extended periods well out of power, at least at the federal level, and in more states as well.
S.W. is right. If the conservatives can't keep certain blocs of voters from voting, then they can't proceed as quickly as they'd like in the business of eradicating everything FDR and LBJ did.
I believe this attempt and some others have been blocked by federal court judges as being unconstitutional.
Aww, now the poor little thug is going to have to re-word his rules to prohibit only non-republicans from voting.
That's all they really want... Everything.
SW: Liberal voters and the money/influence of labor unions are two of the Right's worst enemies. Both need to be vanquished.
Snave: Damn right, that irritating speed bump (liberal voters) needs to be gotten rid of, so the corporate takeover can be completed ASAP.
Demeur: I know some of these extreme rightwing state laws have been overturned (anti-abortion, anti-union, anti-voter); it's hard to keep track.
Dave: He might as well word it that way, since their motive is so obvious anyway.
Funny Congress renewed the voting rights acts which was supposed to prevent this sort of thing.

Erik: Good point. I'm surprised all these state-sponsored voting restrictions don't clash with federal laws.
