Evan Bayh Leaving — So F#$%&# What?

Aside from being a “centrist” Democrat, the retirement of Evan Bayh won’t be much of a loss. Like the saying goes, “character counts.” Or as a California Republican wannabe governor (Dan Lungren) said, “character is what you do when nobody’s looking.” In his case, people looked, and he got trounced by Gray Davis in the 1998 election.

Using “character” as a yardstick, Evan Bayh is an asshole. Period.

In 2005 he had an e-mail filter that blocked not only spam, but online petitions, mass e-mailings from constituents, and other little annoyances that wasted his valuable time. He eventually relented, but only after a massive campaign by Downsize DC, a Libertarian organization.

I haven’t gone to their website for over a year. Like most people, I’m a Libertarian when the opposing party is in power. I took part in a lot of their e-mail campaigns during the Dumbya years.

As far as I’m concerned, Evan Bayh’s political actions and speeches are vastly outweighed by his obvious contempt for his constituents.

The only reference I could find on the Downsize DC website was here. I did a post about it at the time.

If Evan Bayh’s senate seat goes to a Republican, it’ll be like that joke everyone was telling after Ronald Reagan was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s: “How could they tell?”

I'm sure his leaving has already caused the Democratic Party to fail to pass legislation...

Lew: LOL. The Democratic "leadership" will probably try to use his leaving as a scapegoat.

Bee: Yup, it's all over for Obama, yet again. He was finished after those 2 governor races in Virginia and New Jersey, he was toast after that Republican in Mass. got elected to the Senate; and now he's really gonna get it.

Well because of when he left, there was no time to collect signatures to be put on a ballot to replace him. He apparently didn't even call Harry to let him know till after it was reported, what a guy huh? Good thing though, it means the dem establishment there can pick who goes on the ballot.
I was thinking about this from a kind of different angle though. We know old Bayh's wifey works for Wellpoint right? My guess is he will go into lobbying and I give him less than 6 months with his whole, I might go into teaching thoughts. Remember Billy Tauzin, lobbyist for big insurance just quit last week and now Bayh is leaving the senate, watch for him to take Tauzin's place and get that 7 figure salary to talk to old friends in the senate about HCR. Lincoln will be next at the trough, you heard it here first. I am about sick of hearing how the centrists are all leaving, the moderates are leaving. He was a republican for all intents and purposes with his voting record. Part of the "new dem" coalition that wrote the legislation for the unfunded wars and the Medicare D fiasco. I wonder how his dad is feeling about this. It is too bad he wouldn't consider getting back in, but I think I read somewhere he is like 80 something.

Jess: You're right, great timing for Bayh's announcement. More evidence of what a self-centered little shit he is. With all those corporate/lobbyist connections, he's the exact kind of "Democrat" we don't need.

No doubt his father is turning in his grave. (I'm pretty sure he's dead.)

The fact that we knew before the Democratic leadership found out, shows his contempt for the Democratic Party. He is no loss. If the Dems. win his seat it should count as a gain.

Well said, Tom. Your second paragraph sums it up. And as you said, with Dems like him, who needs Republicans?

I'm not sorry to see him go, but I'm burned that he timed it so he basically will get to pick the Dem nominee to replace him. And that replacement will be a DLC/Republican-lite piece of work, you watch.

He's not centrist, just a self-centered jerk who's PO'd because his presidential aspirations went nowhere and no one picked him to be their V.P.

Teeluck: Welcome to the club.

SW: The timing of his announcement sure sucks. I don't know whether this timing was calculated, or just the impulsive behavior of a self-centered 8-year-old. I suspect he has no political convictions whatsoever; he's strictly an opportunist. The vice president gig didn't happen, so on to Plan B: lobbyist.

Randal: Yup, what a character.
