America is “War-Weary,” “Numbed to Drumbeat of Troop Deaths”

Since the United States is so “war-weary,” does this mean we can trim a few million from our multi-trillion dollar defense budget?

And what about all the chickenhawks drumming up hysteria over Iran?  Do these keyboard warrior/cowards know how war-weary the rest of the country is?

As the linked article says:

“It was another week at war in Afghanistan, another string of American casualties, and another collective shrug by a nation weary of a faraway conflict whose hallmark is its grinding inconclusiveness.”

This explains why Mitt Romney didn’t mention the war in Afghanistan or acknowledge the troops during his speech at the Republican National Convention.  But it doesn’t explain why Romney, Paul Ryan and the rest of the Chairborne Division are still trying to get the inbreds all fired up with “Iran Has Nukes!”

So do at least nine other countries.  Get over it Asshole.

And it doesn’t explain why congressional Republicans are having a mass heart attack — unfortunately not fatal — over the prospect of reduced funding for the Pentagon.

Also from the linked article:

“As the war drags on, it remains a faraway puzzle for many Americans. Max Boot, a military historian and defense analyst at the Council on Foreign Relations, has called Afghanistan the ‘Who Cares?’ war. ‘Few, it seems, do, except for service personnel and their families,’ he wrote recently. ‘It is almost as if the war isn't happening at all.’”

The next time Ryan and Romney send out their mating call to their fellow chickenhawks, let’s make sure their speeches get broadcast and YouTubed to war-weary voters everywhere.

Robme did not mention it because it's part of his "laundry list" that apparently needs no mentioning ever. I'm already protesting the next war they are yammering on about with Iran and (insert whoever right here)

I suppose they don't want those defense cuts because it would cut those cushy contracts to Haliburton

Romney, and the right's crackpot crusaders and chickenhawks are trying to work up some anxiety about Iran because if they can, they will be able to hammer Obama for not launching a pre-emptive strike or invading Iran, or something.

Going after Obama on Iraq and Afghanistan hasn't gained any traction because he's handled both well. And besides, as you said, most Americans are numb about the wars. It's not that people don't care. It's that they don't think they can alter Obama's or any other president's war policy one bit. The Vietnam experience indicates they're probably right.

One other thing. By posturing as being all wrought up about the Iran nuke threat, Republicans are making a bid for the Jewish vote. Jews have a very strong presence in the financial industry. Many people in the financial industry are already backing Romney, being miffed about Obama's lack of subservience and in a snit over the the Consumer Financial Protect Bureau. If the broader Jewish vote could be brought along the GOP would get a boost in voters and especially in money.

Last but not least, defense and related industries are Republicans' kind of business people — always good for direct donations and PAC money.

I'm afraid we as a nation, don't really give a damn who dies or where so long as the defense contracts keep rolling in. My local congressman has, for decades, hung his hat on expanding the local military presence and those precious jobs. We somehow can't seem to break the mold to begin creating new jobs in new industries that don't involve killing people. Jimmy Carter tried to wage war on energy and got nowhere with it.

What Erik said...and...Americans are war weary? Why did it take so long? Because Americans love...love...that's LOVE, jamming ourselves down other culture's throats...at the point of a gun. My take is, they are just fucking bored with the current killing ground. Time to move on to a new set of faces...Iran.

Jess: Iran and Syria, Pakistan, Venezuela, North Korea...

Erik: That's right, and what Halliburton (and Bechtel and other international contractors) says, Congress does.

SW: Good point about Romney being able to round up the Jewish vote and Wall Street and defense contractors' contributions, all with one war whoop.

Mr. C: If you're a congressman, those multi-billion dollar defense contracts are more addicting than any drug.

jadedj: Excellent take on the American psyche, as grim as it is. Or to paraphrase Huey Lewis, "I want a new killing ground, one that does what it should..."

They're desperate, so they're throwing the kitchen sink at Obama. They claim they are going to focus on the economy but as they find they aren't able to gain enough ground with that, they'll try whatever else they can... they're pathetic.
