Ronald Reagan: Snubbed by an Ungrateful World
This is just typical! Par for the course. Those Goddamn Socialist Euroweenies spent the whole day celebrating the 20th anniversary of the collapse of the Berlin Wall — and they didn’t even mention the Swashbuckling American Hero who made it all possible.
Merkel and Gorbachev were front and center all through the celebrations. But what about Ronald Reagan??? Why is Gorbachev taking credit for any of this? What, some cheap-ass Communist punk was gonna tear down the Berlin Wall on his own???
When Ronald Reagan went riding off into the sunset, er, into East Germany, with his head tilted to one side, his facial features frozen into that permanent “aww shucks” expression, and those folksy one-liners streaming out one after another — them commies didn’t stand a chance.
Gorbachev tore down that wall because he knew damn well what would happen to him if he didn’t. The Leader Of The Free World made him tear it down. And now we’ve got a whole continent full of surrender monkeys, celebrating the freedom that Ronald Reagan gave them — and they didn’t even thank him!
Fortunately, a few patriotic Americans have remembered what really happened, and they’re giving credit where it’s due.
I suppose those sniveling ungrateful Nicaraguans won’t be honoring Reagan either.
And there’s still more disturbing news out there. Somehow — God only knows how this could have happened — American weapons have fallen into the hands of Afghan insurgents.
Why?!?!?
This is shocking! Unimaginable!!!
How could something like this possibly happen???

I have to give Reagan an excuse Tom. they would be digging up old zombie Reagan, in order for his appearance to make sense. He gets a pass with us but not with the right that thinks he shits unicorns out of his butt. Those idiots keep dragging him up all the time.
I agree with the whole premise this would have happened anyway. I was just little (8) when all this happened and was more content playing piano than being up front and close to the politics then. All the reading I have done has said this was inevitable, with the Lech Welesa(sp) guy and Gorbachev with the whole Solidariti(sp) movement. Reagan came in at the end to lift high his sword and get some of the credit.
I am so not clicking anymore of your links :). That woman makes me sick to my stomach.
I did promise you guys an update if I were to visit the assisted living place, how the residents were feeling with health care. I know this is off topic, I did say I would do that and you said go for it J.
Had lunch there today, was proposed to by a nice elderly gentleman. He did this the last time too, so he obviously doesn't have dementia or anything associated with getting older.
Out of about 25 people I talked to last time there were a couple stragglers, as of today there were zero. One lady said she has been following this, ever since I left last time, and has been able to talk with the other residents at dinners or functions they have. To a one, Medicare or "universal" type coverage was what they wanted.
One old lady had watched this whole vote Saturday and kept talking about if they take women's rights away. then we should just have all men's tallywhacker(this is what she called it) cut off, since they are half the problem when it comes to abortion. One of the old men said, well they will not stand for that and neither will we as men. Nearly every woman in the place said, see then don't tell us what to do with our bodies.
It was a nice lunch and bonus, everyone was more informed about health care, more importantly I was proposed to. public option being open to everyone that would like to have it was a winner there.
Actually, Ms. Malkin, President Obama was meeting with Bibi Netanyahu yesterday, and that's why he couldn't make it. I guess working towards peace in the ME isn't as important to her as propping up the tattered remains of the worst president on record. Well, second, right behind the last.
I swear, if I hear anything more about Reagan ending the cold war (besides your excellent snark, Tom) I'll vomit.
Sorry, Tom, but this figures. After all, about 20 years ago people even stopped crediting Reagan and John Wayne with winning World War II. ;)
If St. Ronald of Reagan was president today they have to change his DEPENDS every five minutes, he was good at rhetoric, when Peggy Noonan got his script right, he would be a quivering wreck with all the crap that is going on right now.
As for the the arms sales links, it seems the USA wants the rest of the world to be armed to the teeth.
Jess: The sickest thing about Michele Malkin is the comments at the end of her posts. Malkin looks like a liberal compared to some of those neckdrooling commenters of hers.
Glad to hear the followup to your visit at the assisted living place, and that the residents there aren't being duped by HMO propaganda.
Lew: Peace in the Middle East? If that happened, what would Michele Malkin write about? She can only fill up so much space ranting about Obamacare and government takeovers. If Malkin didn't have those wicked Ay-rabs to lick around, she'd have to find another scapegoat.
Bee: But he really did end the Cold War. Plus bringing freedom to Nicaragua, and freeing Americans from the tyranny of the nanny state. What a guy.
SW: John Wayne didn't end World War II? What are you saying :)
Holte: You're right, Reagan wouldn't recognize the changes that have happened. That was true when he was president, and even more true for Dumbya. Global changes are happening faster and faster, and Reagan and both Bushes were living in a John Wayne movie.
If Malkin didn't have those wicked Ay-rabs to lick around,
Surely a typo, as we all know Malkin likes to lick around Rush's anus
Lew: LOL, interesting typo. I tried to visualize Michele Malkin licking Rush Limbaugh, but the mind reeled.
Tom,
You can give Reagan credit for this, and Gorbachev did. However there are those of us who remember when Russia invaded Afghanistan, Jimmy Carter did more the boycott the Olympics, he also cut the Wheat imports to Russia whom at the time were estimated getting up to 80% of their Wheat from us. That embargo was hurting them real bad and many analysts were reporting it was ready to bring their economy down to their knees.
In spite of that, Reagan and the Republicans labeled him a wimp against the Russians, Reagan would be tough etc., etc,. etc,. When Reagan was elected the first thing he did was lifted the Wheat Embargo and HW Bush said in a public speech “the Russian want to know how can we trust you not to impose another embargo” (he actually said it in a debate with Dukakis indicating it offended the Russians). No they wanted to do it their way run up Trillions of Debt in defense spending and Star Wars and out spend the Russians Oh how Clever! Brought them down their knees and put us in a Recession.
The Power of Wheat should not be dismissed as reports are that if Nixon cut Wheat exports to the Middle East during the 70’s Oil Embargo, he would have starved them in a matter of months.
During the late 70’s we had a Wheat Shortage and Farmers demanded Ford cut Wheat exports to Russia, but the Administration declined because the Russian’s paid top dollar AND they were afraid the Russian’s could respond militarily. So we paid higher prices those years to subsidize the Russian supply.
Credit should also go to the KGB who stole enough secrets to tell the Government it couldn’t keep up!
They did Credit America at the Ceremonies, the same way they did 20 years ago, they sang an American Song, the same one they sang at Tiananmen square and numerous other places around the world in times of liberation.
Hint: It’s not on the Right Wing Hit Parade so it’s not America the Beautiful
It was “We Shall Overcome!”
Erik
Some of the comments on Malkin's post site are just precious. I almost registered just to comment on some of them.
Obama would've been criticized even if he had gone (as he was with the Olmpics sales pitch trip); besides, don't we have bigger things to worry about (like two wars and the daily deaths of our brothers and sisters in them?
My favorite Reagan memory is when he threw five touchdown passes in the Super Bowl to lead the 49ers over the Broncos. Now that man could multitask.
In a few years, Saint Ronnie will also get credit for bringing THIS country down, with the "spend spend spend without revenue" precedent he set. I am offended, however, that Reagan AND Carter aren't getting their proper recognition for birthing both al Qaeda and the Taliban.
Chimpy was Saint Ronnie on steroids. His destructive policies would have brought great joy to Saint Ronnie, had he been sentient enough to understand them.
Oh, and did you know a solid majority of Russians, eastern Germans, Bulgarians, and Slovaks would like to have their old systems back? I guess that "market" stuff ain't the panacea they thought it would be.
Erik: I didn't know that, or else I'd forgotten, that Reagan lifted the wheat embargo on Russia. It figures. And the whole time he'd be calling Carter a wussie, even though Carter was using the only effective tactic. Just another example of Republicans wanting the right soundbite instead of a solution that actually works.
Interesting about Nixon, if he had cut wheat exports to the Middle East in response to their oil embargo. But that approach is too practical and not flashy or macho enough for a Republican president.
Carlos: The comments are the sickest part of her posts. Some of those knuckledraggers actually make Malkin look liberal.
Randal: Yes, I remember that incredible moment in Reagan's football career. And not only that, but remember he simultaneously beat the shit out of twelve burly fans who had been jeering at him. Our hero.
JR: Nah, if this country collapses, the 'tards will blame it all on Obama, Pelosi, both Clintons and those gummint regulators who ruined America with their socialist nanny state.
I wouldn't doubt that about Russians and Eastern Europeans longing for the good old days. For all of their problems, they weren't plagued with homelessness, poverty and some of the highest murder rates in the world.
Yeah what we need is a strong democrat like say..... Harry Truman.
Here goes a scintilla from my latest in the Huffington Childbirth on the outcome of the presidential elections in Ukraine and the advent of Viktor Yanukovych. Granting it was published after I had already posted my article, I liked this crow's-foot from the Economist: "...old habits on spread to to anyone's redress hard.
