The Values Voter Summit: Exclusive Coverage

If you’re an upstanding Real American, you already know that the Values Voter Summit is being held today through Sunday at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington, D.C.  Most of the GOP presidential candidates will be there, plus a lot of other conservative VIPs.

The Values Voter Summit is being sponsored by the Family Research Council and the American Family Association.  These Godfearing organizations will be warning their audience about the evils of abortion, socialism and the Homosexual Agenda.

Eric Cantor and John Boehner have already spoken.  Later today the audience will get a chance to hear Steve “my nail polish isn’t dry yet” King, Rick Perry and Laura Ingraham.

Tomorrow’s speakers include Glenn Beck, Mitt Romney and Bryan Fischer of the American Family Association.  And tomorrow afternoon there will be a lecture titled Why Christians Should Support Israel Even Though We Hate Jews.

Sunday morning will feature a worship service led by Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council.

Be there.

The Mormon card got thrown into the pile today, with that Robert Jeffres, Jesus freak speaking right before Perry did. Only a born again righteous dude should be considered according to him. Mittens will not get far with the teabangelicals at all. I didn't watch all of it but I did watch enough to be disgusted with the hate shown by people with "values" getcher popcorn ready, it'll get better from here on out. Romney is a nasty campaigner as is Perry.

Tom...I clicked on the first link, Values Voter Summit and the home page of this "idjit" organization (?) was enough to do me in...and ruin my dinner. Hell, the title of this "summit" was actually enough. VALUES VOTER SUMMIT. What the fuck does that mean? Seriously ass wipes...what does that mean? There are voters who have value? And voters who do not? Oh wait...they are referring to voters who have AMURICAN values. Duh...I get it now. My brain hurts listening to this bunch.

“Dogma voters” is the more fitting label. “Values voters” is a label invented by people who like to think of themselves as championing good human values. What many of them are pushing actually is dogma. “Values” are “the principles that help you to decide what is right and wrong, and how to act in various situations.” Cambridge Dictionary of American English. “Dogma” is “a fixed, esp. religious, belief or set of beliefs that people are expected to accept without any doubts.” Id. The two, we can only hope, overlap to some extent, but they are hardly the same. Some of what religious fundamentalists hold up as values others find plainly wrongheaded and even immoral. Labels count. Those pushing the “values voters” label hope it will help them pass off their dogma as values. If they want to push their dogma, that’s their right. But “dogma voters” they are, and that’s what I’ll call them.

Jess: I hadn't heard of Jeffres until yesterday. What a piece of S#$%. Even Perry is trying to distance himself from him. You're right, Romney and Perry will both get nastier as we go along.

jadedj: If you don't hate abortion and homosexuals and love Jesus, then obviously you have no values :)

JR: Yup, their "values" have sure done a lot for us.

Snave: That's an insult to bees.

Doug: Excellent point. Dogma is exactly what this "values" summit is all about. Dogma disguised as "values."
